Yin Shangren
Biography
Researcher of forbidden boundaries
In an early timeline, Yin Shangren lives as a Foundation Establishment recluse on Yin Yin Island, surrounded by altered creatures, preserved specimens, and mortal experimental subjects. He wants to identify the boundary between kinds of life, reverse the Immortal-Mortal Miasma, and determine whether anything can serve as a Foundation Treasure. The inquiry is brilliant and horrifying at once: his procedures inflict grotesque suffering, and other cultivators largely avoid him even when they recognize his unusual knowledge. (Chapters 106–110)
Li Fan remains repelled by Master Yin’s methods but values his theory that apparently ordinary beings and things may be unformed heavenly treasures. Their discussions, Tianyang-related research, and later refinements of “Foundation Establishment Built Upon Oneself” influence both Li Fan and Zhang Haobo. These events belong to a specific repeated-life chronology; later Holy Dynasty encounters should not be read as one uninterrupted personal timeline in which Yin automatically remembers every earlier interaction. His importance instead lies in the recurrence of the same heterodox intellect. (Chapters 239–242; Chapters 288–290)
Holy Dynasty architect of the new method
In a later timeline, the Great Qi Holy Dynasty recruits Yin Shangren into an institutional project to escape the Immortal Ancestor’s cultivation system. He consumes and reworks his imperfect Dao foundation, studies children who independently reverse cultivation principles, and pursues the Immortal-Mortal Miasma as a solvable law rather than a permanent prohibition. The reconstruction is not complete: he later admits that the “self” he recognized as his foundation was incomplete and still requires adjustment. (Chapters 1143–1156; Chapter 1286)
Working with Xu Ke and Li Ping, Master Yin helps carry the Holy Dynasty’s alternative method through its Primordial Golden Core research. Institutional resources give his isolated experiments a scale they never had on Yin Yin Island, and the resulting path is substantial enough to disturb the Taiyan Sect’s future derivations. His social context changes more than his ethics: he becomes a system-builder instead of a solitary recluse, but remains willing to expose dangerous subjects to severe transformations when he thinks the evidence may complete the theory. (Chapters 1154–1191; Chapters 1230–1249)
World Specter and life-death pearls
In the late-corpus timeline, Li Fan recruits Yin Shangren for Xuanhuang’s elevation and reveals the deeper structure behind his monstrous existence. He is a World Specter—an aggregation of remnants left when Xuanhuang devoured destroyed worlds but failed to assimilate every residue. After he helps return Xuanhuang’s evil thought, Heavenly Favor changes the realm’s response to him from rejection toward beneficial acceptance. This is a structural and relational state change, not evidence of a newly named ordinary cultivation realm. (Chapters 1307–1312)
Li Fan becomes teacher and sponsor as Master Yin enters the star sea, while Daoist Hundred Flowers serves as both fellow exile and occasional opponent. Yin absorbs the black and white Life and Death Pearls from Taijia remnants, reconstructs fragments of that world’s inheritance, and attacks Immortal Ark elders with catastrophic death qi. The paired forces also begin repairing his incomplete self-foundation, but their cycling remains unstable. He now interprets aberration as a possible route to belonging in Xuanhuang rather than proof that he must remain forever outside it. (Chapters 1336–1347)
Appearance and personality
Yin Shangren first appears disheveled and ragged, with black-and-white hair and two overlapping voices that reinforce the unease created by his island experiments. After absorbing the Life and Death Pearls, black and white energies rotate through his eyes and his body can become unnaturally still beneath deathly force. These features correspond to different timeline states and transformations; the late World Specter should not be flattened into a conventional robed scholar or given a clean, stable appearance unsupported by the corpus. (Chapters 107–110; Chapters 1336–1347)
He is obsessive, brilliant, blunt, irritable, and intellectually fearless. His curiosity often overrides ordinary compassion, making him horrifyingly amoral toward experimental subjects, yet he is not dogmatic about results. New evidence can make him discard or rebuild a cherished theory, as seen when he acknowledges the incompleteness of his self-foundation. Institutional work and Xuanhuang’s later acceptance give him a larger purpose without removing this danger: he remains capable of discovery precisely because he will cross boundaries most researchers refuse to approach. (Chapters 106–110; Chapters 1154–1191; Chapter 1286)
Abilities and cultivation
Biological and miasma transformation
Master Yin’s earliest expertise comes from long experimentation on bodies, parasites, altered organisms, and the Immortal-Mortal Miasma. He can combine and preserve forms of life, identify unusual reactions, and analyze reversal principles that permit mortals to begin cultivation. The work later feeds directly into Great Qi’s alternative cultivation system. Its limits are ethical and technical: early procedures kill or permanently deform subjects, and even extensive evidence does not initially yield a stable complete theory. His latest contribution is institutional rather than a single combat technique—the Holy Dynasty can build on results once confined to Yin Yin Island. (Chapters 107–110; Chapters 1154–1191)
Foundation Establishment Built Upon Oneself
Yin’s self-foundation theory treats the cultivator’s own existence, rather than a conventional external Heavenly Treasure, as the object on which Foundation Establishment can be built. He applies the theory to himself by consuming and reconstructing an imperfect old foundation, while his instruction shapes other unusual foundations. The mechanism depends on accurately recognizing the “self,” which proves to be the central limit: Yin later concedes that his earlier definition was incomplete. The Life and Death Pearls begin repairing that structure, but the corpus does not present the final corrected foundation as fully settled. (Chapters 239–242; Chapters 1154–1156; Chapter 1286; Chapter 1337)
World Specter nature
Yin Shangren is an aggregation of remnant worlds that Xuanhuang initially cannot absorb. This nature carries residual specters and deathly world energy, explaining why he is more than an eccentric human researcher and why the realm treats him as foreign residue. After he assists Xuanhuang’s Heavenly Dao, Heavenly Favor begins a slow beneficial assimilation that may attach him to the world like a divine natural object. The process is neither instant nor safe: revival forces can agitate the internal remnants, and acceptance does not erase their violent impulses or make his composite identity simple. (Chapters 1307–1312; Chapter 1337)
Black and White Life and Death Pearls
Yin absorbs mutually restraining black and white pearls from the destroyed Taijia Realm. Their cycling releases vitality and death qi, repairs parts of his incomplete self-foundation, and can catastrophically age ancient targets. Because the objects are integrated into his body, they function as power-bearing world relics rather than handheld weapons. Large death storms strain his control: the energies and pupils rotate chaotically, recovery becomes necessary, and inherited Taijia knowledge remains fragmentary. At the latest confirmed stage, both pearls are integrated but still require active regulation rather than providing effortless mastery of life and death. (Chapters 1337–1347)

Relationships
- Li Fan values Yin Shangren’s theories despite revulsion toward his methods. In the late timeline, he becomes Yin’s teacher and sponsor in Xuanhuang’s elevation project.
- Xu Ke is an intellectual partner whose beast research and long guardianship complement Yin’s work on miasma, life, and the Holy Dynasty’s new cultivation method.
- Li Ping gives Yin’s research institutional reach through Great Qi, turning a shunned recluse’s theories into a civilizational alternative to the Immortal Ancestor’s system.
- Zhang Haobo is one of the cultivators whose unusual foundation is illuminated by Yin’s theory that all things may contain unformed Heavenly Treasure potential.
- Daoist Hundred Flowers is a fellow world-exile and occasional opponent in the star-sea period, reflecting both kinship and competition between abnormal existences seeking a place in Xuanhuang.
Items
- A white rib bone is a prized research specimen on Yin Yin Island. His human-handed dog repeatedly steals it, and later evidence suggests it exerts unusual attraction or protection upon mutations; custody is therefore contested even within his laboratory.
- The Black and White Life and Death Pearls are absorbed into Yin Shangren’s body from Taijia remnants. They remain distinct world relics in origin, but no longer function as ordinary possessions that can be carried in an inventory.
