Wurhi

Wurhi of Zabyalla is a small, sharp-tongued thief and gambler whose mercenary friendship with Kyembe carries her into Thameland's final battle.

Biography

Gambling and surviving Thameland's last battle

Wurhi is introduced at the Whetstone tavern defeating Ezerak at dice and then joining Baelin's game despite warnings that neither side should gamble with the other. She wins so decisively that Baelin nurses a lasting grudge. Her bond with Kyembe later brings her into Alex's hired mercenary force in Thameland, where the lack of a shared language leaves her confused and terrified inside Ussex Castle. Even while predicting disaster, she fights beside Kyembe and Ezerak, repeatedly stabs Ravener-spawn, helps protect King Athelstan, and remains in battle after Alex's empowering spell expires. (Chapters 836–899)

Wurhi survives the night, collapses from exhaustion when victory is announced, and accepts the promised gems. After three days of feasting with the Thameish soldiers, she returns to the Whetstone tavern visibly aged by the experience and hurries inside. Her fear never becomes serenity or love of battle, but it also never prevents her from doing the paid work or staying with her companions until the kingdom is safe. (Chapters 899–900)

Appearance and personality

Wurhi is a tiny Zabyallan woman who wears a cloak and carries a sword. She is profane, anxious, fiercely concerned with payment, and much less enthusiastic about glorious death than Kyembe. Those traits coexist with nerve, cunning, and loyalty: she risks gambling against dangerous ancient beings and follows her friends through a battle she believes will kill them all. (Chapters 836 and 884–900)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Wurhi is identified as a thief and demonstrates exceptional gambling skill, beating both Ezerak and Baelin. In battle she uses a sword at close range and survives sustained fighting against Ravener-spawn, first under Alex's empowering magic and later without it. No personal spell, divinity, or supernatural gambling mechanism is shown, so her wins should not be treated as unexplained magic. (Chapters 836, 884, and 898–900)
