Ezerak

Ezerak Kai is a former king turned Whetstone mercenary whose living monster tattoos give him an army carried on his skin.

Biography

And They All Met in a Tavern to A Living Legacy

Ezerak introduces himself through the distance between former rank and present need: he was king of Feuran, but now fears poverty enough to accept Alex's dangerous Cretalikon job. He demonstrates creatures rising from his tattoos and promises both their service and his sword. His judgment helps assemble the rest of the team—he vouches for Celsus and helps shelter the fleeing Kyembe—while his dry comments keep royal pride from becoming pretence about how far he has fallen. (Chapters 511–515)

In Cretalikon, Ezerak unleashes demon lions, griffons, bats, walking trees, and a diabnireus against hostile fiends, then disguises that same army as trained performance beasts at Kaz-Mowang's gala. When Burn-Saw threatens to expose the troupe, Ezerak and Guntile immediately accept Thundar's order to flank the demon rather than abandon their employer. The operation succeeds, and Ezerak survives with his reputation as both a paid warrior and reliable teammate strengthened. (Chapters 516–627)

Searching for Old Enemies, Finding Old Allies to A Funeral and a Person of Means

Alex and Baelin later return to Whetstone seeking warriors for the Ravener's final defeat. Ezerak's presence at the card table makes the reunion almost casual, but he again accepts a war far beyond an ordinary contract. He fights beside Thameish soldiers through the final campaign, earns both gems and public gratitude, and shares three days of celebration with people whose language he does not speak. When Baelin returns the mercenaries to Whetstone, Ezerak enters with visible nostalgia and relief before the tavern disappears. (Chapters 835–900)

Appearance and personality

Ezerak is a large, white-haired man with tanned skin covered in vivid, lifelike monster tattoos. A curved blade hangs at his side, and his bearing retains enough authority that he can name former titles without needing others to treat him as a king. (Chapters 511–516)

He is pragmatic, sardonic, proud, and reliable under contract. Poverty frightens him more than hell, yet he does not hide behind hired status when plans turn dangerous. His comments about death are fatalistic rather than reckless, and his relief on returning to Whetstone shows that survival still matters to him. (Chapters 511–543 and 835–900)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Army-skinned monster binding

Ezerak binds monsters to his command and flesh as living tattoos. By chanting and raising his weapon, he can make the images boil off his skin and expand into full-sized combatants, including flying, terrestrial, and demonic creatures. When one manifestation is destroyed, it collapses into ink and fumes and returns to his body drained of colour. This shows that losses exhaust individual tattoos rather than permanently producing unlimited replacements. (Chapters 511–516)

Mana limits and coordination

Alex senses that maintaining the tattoo army uses substantial mana and plans mana-draining magic as a possible counter. Ezerak offsets that burden through variety and command: some creatures scout, others overwhelm in close quarters, and the same controlled forms can perform rather than fight. The narrative does not quantify how long a faded tattoo takes to recover or how new creatures are bound. (Chapters 516–522)

Swordsmanship and leadership

Ezerak carries a curved sword, claims a harder and faster strike than his already forceful open-handed blow, and remains composed while directing multiple creatures. His former command experience appears in quick threat assessment and recommendations about other warriors, though the corpus demonstrates his summoned army more fully than any named sword technique. (Chapters 511–543)
