Kyembe
Kyembe the Spirit Killer is a half-dark-elf mercenary whose hellfire ring, speed, and audacity make him one of Alex's most dangerous hired allies.
Biography
Those of Oaths, Blood and Coin to A Funeral and a Person of Means
Kyembe rushes into the Whetstone tavern while fleeing temple guards after killing a high priest who had secretly sent a summoned demon against his own people. Alex Roth, Ezerak, and Guntile hide him, creating a life-debt that Kyembe immediately tries to repay. Alex distrusts the convenient arrival but hires him for the Cretalikon raid, keeping a potential spy close. Kyembe proves the choice sound: he destroys demons with his ring, performs acrobatics at Kaz-Mowang's gala, and invents a terrified-refugee act that draws trophy-room guards into position for the infiltrators' strike. (Chapters 512–543)
The successful raid establishes more than a paid transaction. Alex later names Kyembe among the warriors he wishes were present against Uldar's church, then returns to Whetstone when he needs old allies for the final Ravener campaign. Kyembe accepts, fights beside people who do not share his language or homeland, and survives. After three days feasting with Thameland's soldiers, he collects the promised gems, waves goodbye, and steps back into the tavern before it vanishes. His latest state is that of a living itinerant mercenary whose bond with Alex has endured multiple wars. (Chapters 627–900)
Appearance and personality
Kyembe has dark umber skin, crimson eyes, tightly curled black hair, and slightly pointed ears. On the Cretalikon mission he wears a bright purple costume, blue cape, grinning skull mask, curved sword, and a conspicuous ring. His movements are fluid and fast, while his relaxed posture hides close attention to other people's body language. (Chapters 512–518)
He is theatrical, irreverent, generous about debts, and comfortable with lethal work. Kyembe can joke after narrowly escaping execution, but his hatred of demons and corrupt summoners is serious. He prefers to meet danger in a fine mood and uses improvisation rather than mistaking courage for a requirement to attack head-on. (Chapters 512–543 and 835–900)
Magic, abilities, and skills
Hellfire through the Spirit Killer's ring
The Spirit Killer's Ring gathers power before firing a white beam of hellfire. The flame can consume a demon to ash and then leap between nearby targets, killing several with one discharge. Charging takes time, and the hellfire burns Kyembe's hand and arm as its price, so repeated use is constrained by both injury and his reserve of eldritch energy. (Chapter 516)
Eldritch healing
Kyembe can cover his burned flesh with muted golden light, slough away damaged tissue, and expose healed skin beneath. He states that he can keep paying the ring's cost only while his eldritch energies last. The healing therefore offsets but does not erase the weapon's limitation, and Alex offers blood magic when conserving that reserve matters. (Chapter 516)
Swordsmanship, speed, and performance
Kyembe carries an enchanted curved sword and moves with enough speed and balance to cartwheel, backflip, dance in formation, spin weapons, and balance on a narrow staff. Those skills support both assassination and disguise: at the gala he performs before hostile demons, then turns acting and movement into a tactical lure. The ring remains his most destructive demonstrated attack, while the sword's specific enchantment is not explained. (Chapters 512–522)
