Then-Arus

Then-Arus is an ancient War-Spirit of Steel whose long alliance with Professor Mangal demonstrates the relational ideal of summoning.

Biography

Mangal's model of relational summoning

Then-Arus has fought across planes since before sapient life existed in Generasi and ordinarily hates being summoned. Mangal's adherence to negotiated rules changes that relationship: repeated mutually beneficial contracts create an alliance strong enough that she can call him without bargains or protective circles, while he can ask favours in return. During her lesson he calmly demonstrates both his speed and the danger of incomplete containment, transforming an arm into a blade and jumping over a circle that lacks a closed magical ceiling. His restraint is voluntary once free, not the product of failed control. (Chapters 177–178)

Naming the Unmaker and witnessing Alex's mastery

Years later, Then-Arus answers Mangal's call and acknowledges Alex Roth's record of violence. When Alex asks which war-spirit would be most formidable, Then-Arus reluctantly names Asmaldestre, warning that her nature and Alex's then-antithetical soul will make the attempt lethal. He later meets Alex after the Fool's Mark is gone and initially belittles his summoning ability, only to watch the archwizard conjure Asmaldestre with Conjure Ultimate Ally. Confronted by the being he called the greatest of their kind, Then-Arus trembles at the prospect of a legendary destruction and leaves shaken after Mangal dismisses him. Appearance and personality

Then-Arus is a towering humanoid entity of living steel whose features can remain in a tranquil mask while his body radiates violence, heat, screams, and the sensation of death. His language sounds like metal and pain, and his telepathic voice resembles countless blades cutting flesh. Proud and contemptuous of fear, he nonetheless respects precise titles, proven violence, reciprocal obligation, and opponents worthy of legend. (Chapters 177–178, 697–698, and 801)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Then-Arus can transform his metal limbs into weapons and move with such speed that observers miss the motion. He leaps high enough to escape an open-topped summoning cylinder and arrives through silver liquid when Mangal calls him. As a war-spirit he is immortal in the sense that Mangal describes spirits as having infinite time, but the story does not establish that he is indestructible; he himself believes Asmaldestre could destroy him. His reliable material-world presence depends on Mangal's relational summons and their alliance, not on her overpowering him. The narrative presents the relationship as the reason she can call such a powerful being safely without a binding circle. (Chapters 177–178)
