Rioran

Rioran is a young servant of Uldar sent from the hidden Vale to spy on the Generasian expedition in Greymoor.

Biography

A first mission compromised

Rioran leaves the Vale at twenty-seven believing himself prepared to act as Uldar's unseen eye, but Generasi's casual abundance of magic unnerves him. Against the coordinated plan of Stanwic and Catherine, he secretly infiltrates the research tent with blessed ash, memorises experimental records, and escapes its wards. His success collapses when Cedric senses the trace of divinity and catches him. Cedric conceals the incident to protect the alliance but threatens Rioran against further interference, leaving the spy unable to move freely and ashamed that his first mission made him visible. On the return journey, Rioran's fear turns toward an aeld sapling that Stanwic recognises; he initially wants it destroyed, then controls the impulse when challenged. Before Izas, he admits Cedric's warning and reports both the Generasians' research and Alex Roth's unsettling ability to read trained movement. The gathered intelligence proves useful, but Rioran is not dismissed with the other spies, making the consequences of his disobedience unresolved when the scene ends. (Chapters 334–336)

Appearance and personality

Rioran is a sandy-haired, twenty-seven-year-old man whose back bears flagellation scars from childhood disobedience. His training gives him poised, adaptable body language, but his first mission exposes a mixture of pride, fear, impulsiveness, and sincere devotion. He can recover calm under immediate danger, yet he also wants to make weaker things feel the fear he carries, a reaction he consciously restrains. (Chapters 328–336)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Rioran is trained in stealth, disguise through natural mannerisms, observation, memorisation, hand signals, and lethal work with knives, saps, garrottes, crossbows, and swords. He moves silently past guards, endures a burn without crying out, and reconstructs complex written evidence from memory. He has no talent for divinity and casts no personal spells. (Chapters 328–336)

His blessed ash parts cloth and magical wards long enough for infiltration, but its divinity is detectable to a sensitive Chosen when other divine power is absent. The tool therefore bypasses barriers without making its user universally undetectable. (Chapters 330–331)
