Donovan
Donovan is a Generasi graduate and friend of Amir who combines dry teasing with detailed knowledge of the city's conflict with sea gods.
Biography
Festival loyalty and suspicion
Donovan joins Amir's old friends for the Great Water Hunt, teasing Ursula for avoiding sunlight, people, and fun while complaining about the poorer pay of academic work. He explains how Oreca terrorised the coast, lost worship when wizardry replaced divine protection, and attacked Generasi in retaliation, even quoting Roal's account. When Ursula's anger attracts attention, Donovan calls the outburst foolish and joins the group in pressing her to stop because Amir is already under suspicion. During the Grand Battle he remains beside Amir and reacts with disbelief to Alex's team's ability. Later, after Leopold is exposed and Amir imprisoned, Donovan is absent from the next Games; the text does not establish whether he left Generasi or what became of him. (Chapters 223–243 and 575)
Appearance and personality
Donovan is a thin, rangy, pale young man. He is talkative, sardonic, and fond of needling friends, but his humour gives way to caution when public behaviour threatens Amir. He also shows enthusiasm for local history and competition, making him more than merely the group's sceptical voice. (Chapters 223 and 243)
Magic, abilities, and skills
Donovan is a university graduate, but no personal spell or magical discipline is demonstrated. His clearest ability is historical knowledge: he explains Oreca's worship, coercive rule, conflict with Generasi's wizards, and death at Roal's hands. The source does not say whether this knowledge comes from formal magical study or personal interest. (Chapter 223)
