Choi Han

Choi Han is a Korean transmigrant and swordmaster who survives for decades in the Forest of Darkness without visibly aging. After the destruction of Harris Village, his meeting with Cale Henituse diverts him from the lonely path described in Birth of a Hero.

Biography

Decades in the Dark Forest

Choi Han arrives from Korea in the Forest of Darkness and survives there for decades without visibly aging. The forest gives him no formal teacher or social world; it forces him to build a body, instincts, and swordsmanship capable of enduring one of the continent's Five Wonders. Harris Village eventually becomes the first place outside Korea that he accepts as home. (Chapters 1–2)

That home is destroyed while he gathers herbs. Arm's attackers murder the villagers and leave the settlement burned. Choi Han had remained gentle enough that he had not killed humans before this loss, but grief drives him into his first human killings. The violence is not simply evidence of strength: it is the moment isolation and rage threaten to decide the rest of his life. (Chapters 1–2)

Cale Henituse meets him immediately afterward, feeds him, and gives him a destination rather than an enemy. Choi Han accepts the task of escorting Rosalyn and Lark to the capital. What begins as direction from a stranger interrupts the solitary revenge path Cale expected from Birth of a Hero. (Chapters 2–3)

Protecting a different future

The escort reveals that Choi Han's strength includes restraint. When Lark enters a berserk state, Choi Han does not cut him down. He uses aura to protect the boy, increases its pressure to draw Lark's attention, and accepts a minor injury while preventing the transformation from becoming a tragedy. The intervention helps the wolf children reach safety earlier than they did in the original story. (Chapter 7)

At the capital plaza, he turns the same black aura against terrorists while Cale shields the crowd. This division of labor becomes characteristic: Cale creates the plan and protects the widest group, while Choi Han removes the threat that demands decisive close combat. He also helps free Raon, adding another survivor of captivity to the household forming around Cale. (Chapters 5, 10)

Choi Han's earnestness makes him well suited to protection and poorly suited to deception. He follows Cale's cover stories faithfully, but his acting remains conspicuous enough that allies must manage political conversations around him. This social limitation persists even as his battlefield judgment improves. (Chapters 35–36, 50, 57)

Arm and the Empire

Returning to Harris Village forces Choi Han to place current companions beside his dead. Cale orders proper graves for the villagers, while later battles establish that Arm caused the massacre. Choi Han's fight against the organization is therefore personal, but it is no longer a solitary rampage; he acts inside a coalition whose members he intends to bring home. (Chapters 13, 24–25, 45, 57)

His aura control becomes increasingly precise. He can sense another expert's aura, conceal his own output when ordered, and reduce black aura to a tiny edge that silently destroys a lock. During the imperial operation, Cale judges him several levels stronger than Huiten, an imperial swordmaster. Choi Han's threat comes not only from maximum force but from applying exactly enough force without exposing the plan. (Chapters 27, 35)

By the Sun Palace operation, the group has replaced the social world he lost twice—first Korea, then Harris. His loyalty to Cale is not obedience without judgment; it is attachment to the person whose plans repeatedly give isolated or persecuted people a way to survive together. (Chapters 35–39)

The northern war

During the northern war, Choi Han functions as Cale's mobile spear and close guard. Flight magic places him against aerial targets, his aura strikes enemy mage ships, and Cale explicitly assigns him to block any physical or magical attack aimed at Cale. He moves between independent assault and protection depending on what the battle requires. (Chapters 47, 51)

The half-blood dragon exposes a real ceiling. Its light is capable of incinerating or erasing Choi Han's incomplete darkness, so courage and superior technique cannot simply close the power gap. Choi Han remains overwhelming to ordinary martial fighters, but the encounter shows that his black aura is neither complete nor invulnerable. (Chapters 48, 57–58)

The war also resolves an emotional habit formed in the forest. Sunset no longer automatically sends him fleeing for shelter after decades of survival, and he explicitly tells the others that they should bear Cale's burdens together. His latest role is therefore larger than strongest swordsman: he is one of the people responsible for making sure the new household does not reproduce his old isolation. (Chapter 57)

Appearance and personality

Choi Han has black hair, black eyes, and the appearance of a young man despite the decades he spent in the Forest of Darkness. He usually dresses simply and keeps his sword close. Earnest, righteous, and direct, he can be frighteningly ruthless toward enemies but gentle with those he accepts. He is a poor actor and an uncomfortable liar, which makes Cale's elaborate deceptions difficult for him even when he follows them faithfully. (Chapters 2–10, 36, 39, 44, 50)

Swordsmanship and black aura

Choi Han is a swordmaster who channels black aura through his blade. Aura increases reach and destructive power, but his defining technical advantage is control. He can intensify it to draw a berserk opponent's attention, conceal it during infiltration, or compress it into a tiny silent edge. The same discipline lets him move from breaking a lock without an alarm to striking an aerial war asset. (Chapters 7, 10, 27, 35, 47)

The scoped text does not name a formal sword teacher. His art is instead associated with the decades he survived in the Dark Forest. By the imperial arc, his output and technique place him several levels above Huiten, and normal martial opponents cannot meaningfully contest him. The Müller-forged Sword gives him a weapon built to withstand that aura rather than changing its source. (Chapters 1–2, 35, 43, 57)

His aura has a confirmed limit. The half-blood dragon's light can erase or incinerate his still-incomplete darkness. This is a direct interaction disadvantage, not merely a matter of fatigue, and it forces the group to treat the dragon as a threat Choi Han cannot solve through a straightforward aura clash. Sensing, restraint, and protection

Choi Han can sense hostile aura and read the presence of high-level martial opponents. More importantly, he can restrain his own force. Against Lark, he protects the transformed boy, changes aura pressure to redirect attacks, and avoids treating a vulnerable ally like an enemy. This makes his swordsmanship useful in rescue work where indiscriminate power would cause another disaster. (Chapters 7, 27)

As a guard, he positions himself to intercept both magic and physical attacks. Protecting another person can divide his attention or make him accept injury, but he repeatedly chooses that cost. Cale consequently trusts him with the hardest dual assignment: attack the strongest target when ordered, then return and become the barrier immediately around the commander. (Chapters 7, 47, 51)

Forest-honed body and battlefield judgment

Decades in the Dark Forest give Choi Han exceptional speed, endurance, reactions, and familiarity with monsters. These traits support his aura rather than replacing it. They allow him to cross hostile ground, continue through long operations, and act independently beyond a defensive line without losing the route back to his allies. (Chapters 1–2, 13, 47–51)

His tactical judgment is strongest when an objective is concrete: identify the dominant threat, protect the assigned person, or use only the force a covert operation permits. Social improvisation remains the inverse weakness. Even late in scope, his acting has improved only marginally, and political allies are advised to handle nobles around him. (Chapters 35, 47, 50, 57)

• Cale Henituse: Cale reaches Choi Han immediately after Harris and redirects grief into protection. Choi Han becomes Cale's strongest mobile fighter and one of the people most determined to stop him from carrying every burden alone.
• Raon Mir: Choi Han helps free Raon and later fights beside him. Both are immensely powerful survivors whose place in the household begins with Cale refusing to leave a captive child behind.
• Rosalyn and Lark: Escorting them begins Choi Han's departure from isolation. His restrained protection of Lark proves that his power can preserve a future rather than only avenge a past.
• Mary: Choi Han and Mary become a direct, reliable frontline partnership against Arm, sharing the role of powerful outsiders whom Cale places at the center of Rowoon's defense.
