Mirror Cufflink

The Mirror Cufflink was a glass-like accessory that let its wearer enter the mirror world, sense and record mirror coordinates, and transmit matter across otherwise obstructed mirror connections. It was a consumable item: every activation reduced a finite stock of uses until the cufflink turned gray-white and disintegrated.

History

Franca's coordinate recorder

Franca Roland wore the cufflink during the team's infiltration of a special mirror world, but conserved its charges when Lumian Lee could provide travel. Moran Avigny confirmed that it could record the hidden Overseer mirror's coordinates. During spirit channeling, his spirit held the cufflink and transferred those coordinates into it; Fors Wall then inspected or adjusted the item before returning it. (Chapters 2151, 2156, and 2159–2160)

When Franca tried to activate it inside Perle's sealed region, the cufflink glowed but did not admit her into a mirror. That failure revealed that the apparent cave was itself a mirror world: ordinarily one cannot enter the mirror world from inside it, only jump between its mirrors. (Chapter 2162)

Morora communications and exhaustion

Lumian borrowed the cufflink for Morora, initially preserving its four remaining uses. He later activated it to enter a local mirror, sense prepared marks, and send a written message through an otherwise distant and dangerous barrier. Further activations let him evade the Fog of War through mirrors. The cufflink could locate accessible mirror coordinates, but it could not automatically identify every mirror's safety or defeat stronger sealing. (Chapters 2229–2258)

During the final struggle around 0-01, Lumian used it to reach Mirror Person Guei through a reflective breastplate and later to escape Albus's indiscriminate attack. On that last activation, the cufflink turned gray-white and crumbled into dust. Lumian explicitly reported to Franca that he had used it up. (Chapters 2266–2277)

Abilities and properties

  • Activation against a mirror admitted the user to the mirror world, from which prepared marks or recorded coordinates could be sensed and reached. Normal mirror-world restrictions still applied. (Chapters 2151, 2162, and 2232)
  • It recorded nearby or deliberately supplied mirror coordinates, including an Overseer contact point transferred through a dead Mirror Person's spirit. It did not provide complete knowledge of what lay beyond each coordinate. (Chapters 2156 and 2159)
  • It could give a held object a reflective, glass-like state and transmit it across a barrier toward a distant target mirror. This enabled Lumian's letter from Morora. (Chapter 2232)
  • Charges were strictly finite. Four remained when Lumian began testing it in Morora; later dialogue tracked two, and the final use destroyed the accessory. (Chapters 2229, 2258, 2267, and 2269)

Ownership and custody

Holder or custodianRelationship to the item
Franca RolandEstablished owner; used it in the Overseer investigation and lent it to Lumian.
Moran AvignyBriefly held it as a channeled spirit to record the Overseer mirror's coordinates.
Fors WallInspected or processed its recorded mirror information before returning it.
Lumian LeeBorrowed it for Morora and consumed all remaining activations; the physical item ended as dust.
