Die of Probability

The Die of Probability was the living Uniqueness of the Wheel of Fortune, or Fate, pathway. Its red-pipped faces adjusted the probability of favorable and unfavorable events, potentially killing either an enemy or its own wielder. Its sentience, grudges, and ability to broaden its influence made it much more dangerous than a tool of simple luck.

History

Escape from Life School custody

Darkwill carried the milky-white die after his teacher Roy King entrusted it to him, but an accidental drop awakened it. Will Auceptin identified the item for Klein Moretti, explained its faces and sealing requirements, and warned that repeated intimidation would eventually make it retaliate against the intimidator. (Chapters 606–607)

Klein temporarily cowed it by exposing it to the True Creator's corruption in the All-Black Eye. The method calmed it for roughly twelve hours at a time. He also negotiated with it directly and used a roll of one to maximize misfortune against an approaching Aurora Order powerhouse, causing the enemy to leave. The result demonstrated its utility without making it safely controllable. (Chapters 606–610)

At Oravi, Darkwill passed it to Carnot and Fate Councilor Ricciardo. Ricciardo sealed it inside a looped, inscribed boundary that used periodic fate to keep it asleep. The Life School of Thought retained it for Will rather than treating Klein as its owner. (Chapter 611)

Accommodation by Will

Will repeatedly sought a safe method to accommodate the Uniqueness and explained that his reboot into infancy delayed the attempt. Long afterward, the fully awakened Fool Klein helped him accommodate the Die of Probability. From that point, it no longer existed as an independent Sealed Artifact; it became part of Will's divine configuration. (Chapters 818, 1087, 1124, and 2582)

Abilities and properties

  • A roll of one maximized unfavorable probability; two raised it greatly; three raised it; four through six applied corresponding degrees of favorable probability. A “less bad” face was not necessarily safe, since a sufficiently high probability could enable almost any accident. (Chapter 606)
  • It could kill a demigod, but could just as readily kill the user. Its living nature made a wielder oscillate between good and bad fortune rather than consistently choosing beneficial results. (Chapter 606)
  • As it awakened, it could control the people and objects around its wielder by altering the probability of their actions. Will suspected that, given time, this could expand to the entire world except deities; the corpus labels that world-scale result as suspicion, not a completed demonstration. (Chapter 606)
  • A true seal had to isolate it from the real, spirit, and astral worlds. The Life School's fate-bound loop achieved practical containment; intimidation only bought approximately twelve hours. Repeating intimidation reduced its effect until, after about a week, it would mark the intimidator and manipulate probability against them. (Chapters 606 and 611)
  • Will could reset it to a degree, but still considered it dangerous. Its aura also attracted high-level Fate-pathway attention, including the risk of Ouroboros finding it. (Chapters 606 and 609)
