Black Tear

Black Tear was a black, tear-shaped headpiece formed from the final tear and Beyonder characteristic of a Demoness of Despair. It combined mirror-world mobility and detection with plague, charm, and an intensified finishing attack, but continuously infected its surroundings and imposed emotional, erotic, and romantic curses.

History

Morora prize and specialized containment

Lumian Lee obtained Black Tear after the struggle over 0-01 in Morora. Fors Wall identified it as a Grade 1 Sealed Artifact and isolated a compartment in Lumian's Traveler's Bag for it. Because the bag could not fully block its influence, Lumian regularly burned that compartment for more than half an hour to destroy the accumulating mystical pathogens. Fors also described two alternatives: continuous purification by a Sun-pathway artifact, or confinement behind a mirror, with the risk that a broken mirror would strand Black Tear in the mirror world. (Chapters 2275–2276)

Used only in short intervals, the headpiece became the team's reusable mirror tool. Lumian employed it to detect whether the Demoness of Black was watching through reflective surfaces. Franca Roland wore it to send letters and bring Amandina through distant mirrors, while Lumian later used it for the same kind of traversal. Franca removed it quickly whenever possible, since even a Demoness of Affliction could only resist its pathogen rather than ignore it. (Chapters 2281–2293)

Combat use and destruction

In the Samaritan Women's Spring operation, Franca wore Black Tear for mirror magic and combat while Lumian used the Sword of Courage to share part of its effects. During the confrontation with Voisin Sanson and Higdon, Black Tear let Franca traverse the mirror world and allowed Lumian's group to escape a distorted cycle through a window. Its authority was not absolute: stronger Mirror People could block routes, and transformation into a sheep sealed Lumian's ability to activate it. The intermittent Pleasure also briefly stunned him despite damage sharing. (Chapters 2300–2306)

Amon later took Black Tear directly from the Traveler's Bag and shattered it. Its light condensed into a withered, blackened, translucent heart—the Demoness of Despair characteristic subsequently given to Lumian for his advancement. The accessory itself therefore ceased to exist. (Chapter 2310)

Abilities and properties

  • Black Tear continuously produced and spread a mystical pathogen. Wearing it infected the user; a Demoness of Affliction had greater resistance, not immunity. Ordinary storage did not stop the leakage, while fire or Sun-domain purification could destroy the pathogen. (Chapters 2275–2276)
  • It enhanced the wearer's charm with a slightly feminine cast without changing sex. Carrying it made a person more emotional, easier to move or persuade, and more likely to experience unwanted romantic encounters. The wearer also experienced involuntary Pleasure every forty-five to ninety seconds, a potentially fatal lapse in combat. (Chapter 2275)
  • The headpiece granted mirror illusions, message transmission, Mirror Traversal, perception through reflective surfaces, and access to characteristics of a special mirror world. It could move people or letters between prepared mirrors, but could not safely overcome every sealed or higher-authority mirror region. (Chapters 2275, 2281–2293, and 2303–2304)
  • It strengthened Cull by concentrating all available power into a single attack. The corpus identifies this property, but does not isolate a fully documented strike whose result can be attributed to Black Tear alone. (Chapter 2275)
