Her apparent stinginess comes from experience: their father died in war, their mother followed after illness, Benson delayed his own education to support them, and a classmate had to leave school when her family lost its income. Klein's improved income lets the family move to Daffodil Street, eat better, hire Bella, and enjoy books, food, and theater without immediately calculating survival.
