Camus
Don Givré Camus Castiya is a young action-team leader in the Port Pylos Patrol Team who becomes Lumian Lee's principal official contact during the Tizamo investigation. Ambition and financial need first make him receptive to an irregular bargain, but gratitude, professional duty, and clear-eyed judgment keep him in the crisis after the money problem is largely solved.
Biography
Role in the Central Conflict
Camus is a distant member of Feynapotter's Castiya royal family who arrives in Matani as a Sequence 9 Arbiter and advances rapidly over five years. That speed leaves him short of money for formulas, ingredients, charms, and practical mystical items. He wants Sequence 6 and sees the patrol's possible vice-captain vacancy as a route to institutional support. When “Louis Berry” offers the bounty from a newly killed serial murderer in exchange for access to an older case dossier, Camus verifies the corpse and the enormous bounty before accepting. He allows the dossier to be copied but not removed, balancing personal gain against the patrol's custody rules rather than simply selling evidence. (Chapters 2071–2077)
The transaction exposes how badly Port Pylos has been compromised. Teammate Sow attacks Camus with a strange poker card that can control its victim; Camus turns Psychic Piercing on his attacker while resisting the command to kill himself, and Captain Reaza's undead servant removes the card before it can finish him. The rescue matters because Reaza has saved Camus from the brink of death three times. Even after Lumian's payment brings Camus close to his financial goal, he agrees to escort the investigation to Tizamo under Reaza's orders, motivated by debt and loyalty rather than the vice-captain contest alone. In Tizamo he translates interviews, detects deception, shares local knowledge, and continues working despite discovering that several colleagues and superiors conceal dangerous affiliations. (Chapters 2077–2087 and 2090–2097)
Camus then chooses to accompany Lumian, Rhea, Amandina, and the others into the Dream Festival and toward the black ancient tomb. His Psychic Piercing is expected to help interrupt Hisoka's projections, but the opponent operates far above the temporary group's level; Camus and the other supporting Beyonders become vulnerable to dream attacks and must be removed from the decisive fight. He survives, helps rescue the injured after the disaster, and recovers Reaza's Beyonder characteristic. Learning that Reaza served the Numinous Episcopate's Royal faction does not erase his gratitude: Camus judges that the captain did not personally betray him and takes relief in knowing his rescuer was not merely a traitor. (Chapters 2119–2123 and 2131)
The aftermath also changes his ambition. A dead rival and empty vice-captain position could give him what he had wanted, but the crisis reveals the patrol team's low ceiling and divided loyalties. Camus decides to leave Matani, use his accumulated money to advance to Sequence 6, and contact the Castiya main branch, which offers a safer and clearer path toward Sequence 5. His choice is not sudden cowardice: after fulfilling his debt to Reaza and helping the town, he recognizes that remaining for a title would bind him to a small organization whose hidden commitments he neither shares nor controls. (Chapter 2131)
Appearance and personality
Camus is a well-defined young man with fluffy brown hair that often looks as though he slept without washing it and brownish-yellow eyes. He commonly wears a white shirt with an unbuttoned yellow vest, keeps one hand in a pocket, smokes cigarettes, and drinks Highlander coffee with milk and two sugars. Although his position and experience make him seem older, he is not yet twenty-four. (Chapters 2071, 2077, and 2093)
He is ambitious, pragmatic, and socially relaxed. Camus can negotiate a bribe without pretending it is official procedure, jokes with teammates, and openly calculates what advancement will cost. He is not wholly transactional, however. He risks Tizamo because Reaza saved him, continues relief work after the occult battle, and separates a colleague's hidden factional loyalty from personal betrayal. His final refusal to chase the newly vacant post shows growing strategic judgment: status matters, but not enough to make him ignore the institution's limitations. (Chapters 2071–2077, 2090, and 2131)
Pathways and abilities
Camus follows the Arbiter pathway. The corpus first describes him as a Sequence 9 Arbiter who rose to Sequence 7 within five years; one passage renders that Sequence as “Justiciar,” while his demonstrated rank is repeatedly named Interrogator and the next Sequence is Judge. He has not yet consumed the Judge potion by his last appearance. (Chapters 2077, 2090, and 2131)
Arbiter training and interrogation
The lower Sequences give Camus enhanced physical condition, agility, combat discipline, firearms proficiency, and the trained authority of an official investigator. As an Interrogator he can judge whether a speaker shows signs of deception, combining supernatural perception with attention to behavior. The sense is useful in interviews but not omniscience: it evaluates the answer being given and can be frustrated by incomplete knowledge, mental interference, or truths phrased to omit a crucial fact. Camus therefore translates, compares testimony, and investigates physical evidence rather than using the power as a substitute for inquiry. (Chapters 2071, 2090, and 2093)
Psychic Piercing
Camus's signature attack manifests through an intense flash in his eyes and strikes the target's psyche or spirit. It can interrupt an attacker without requiring him to win a physical exchange, which makes it a valuable complement to Rhea's ranged lightning and Lumian's direct attacks. He uses it against Sow while resisting the poker card's control, and Lumian later includes Camus specifically to counter dream projections. The technique is not guaranteed against superior beings: powerful mental defenses, dream authority, or an overwhelming difference in level can blunt it, and concentrating on one target leaves Camus exposed to the surrounding battlefield. (Chapters 2077–2083 and 2123)
Relationships
- Lumian Lee: Under the Louis Berry identity, Lumian bribes Camus for evidence access and then becomes his most capable temporary ally. Camus moves from cautious transaction to active cooperation and ultimately takes Lumian's strategic advice seriously.
- Rhea: Camus's patrol teammate and partner through Tizamo, the Dream Festival, and disaster relief. Their Psychic Piercing and Lightning Arrows are expected to provide complementary ranged disruption.
- Amandina: A local ally whose ability to enter and navigate the Dream Festival makes the expedition possible. Camus helps protect her but is also dependent on her access to the dream.
- Reaza: Camus's captain and three-time rescuer. Discovering Reaza's Royal-faction allegiance complicates but does not erase their bond; Camus keeps the recovered characteristic and refuses to reinterpret every rescue as deception.
- Hisoka: The superior enemy whose Dream Festival scheme defeats the temporary group's intended teamwork. The confrontation teaches Camus the limits of Mid-Sequence support against demigod-level preparation.
Items
- Custom silver revolver: Camus's principal mundane weapon, suited to his official training and used with specialized cartridges. It remains equipment rather than an Arbiter-pathway power. (Chapters 2074–2083)
- Purifying Bullets: Golden special ammunition carried for undead, corrupted, or spirit-like targets. Their supply is finite, and their effectiveness depends on the target's level and nature. (Chapters 2083 and 2097)
