Wang Chao

Wang Chao is a star teacher at Hongtian Academy, the son of Wang Chong, and the kingdom's best-known spear instructor at the beginning of the story. He is also Lu Xun's close friend and most vocal supporter during the Teacher Evaluation, which makes him an early antagonist to Zhang Xuan without making him malicious. (Chapters 7–8, 160–231)

Wang Chao repeatedly misjudges Zhang Xuan and his students because loyalty to Lu Xun combines with pride in his own teaching and clan spear art. Once the evaluation proves Zhang Xuan's ability and reveals that Wang Chong has already learned spear principles from him, Wang Chao abandons the hostility. His final appearance has him accepting the right to learn the same art with gratitude. (Chapters 160–231)

Biography

Spear teacher and Lu Xun's partisan

Wang Chao is introduced through Zheng Yang's disappointment at being rejected by Hongtian Academy's foremost spear teacher. Wang Chao can see that Zheng Yang lacks the crux of the spear but cannot diagnose the heartbreak that stalls him, whereas Zhang Xuan identifies and corrects the problem immediately. The contrast establishes Wang Chao as a respected specialist whose discernment remains bounded. (Chapters 7–8)

When Lu Xun challenges Zhang Xuan to a Teacher Evaluation, Wang Chao commits himself to his friend's side. He helps seek the favor of the supposed master teacher Yang Xuan, argues that Lu Xun should win a contest over tea, and publicly treats Zhang Xuan as an unworthy rival. His hostility is social and competitive: he speaks unfairly and tries to humiliate Zhang Xuan, but does not join schemes that would directly harm him or his students. (Chapters 87, 127, 170–207, 231)

The Teacher Evaluation overturns his certainty

Wang Chao breaks his clan's normal rules to teach Mo Xiao three moves of the Wang hereditary spear art for the evaluation. He expects the technique and Lu Xun's stronger students to secure victory, then watches Mo Xiao concede to Zheng Yang after recognizing a far superior path. Wang Chao initially experiences the surrender as an insult to his lineage, but Zheng Yang's later display of nascent Spear Intent forces him to admit that even he would be helpless against the move at equal cultivation. (Chapters 160, 215–222)

The revelation reaches into his own family. Wang Chong explains that he paid Zhang Xuan for the very spear art Wang Chao has just admired and regards Zhang as half a teacher. Wang Chao then learns that Zhang Xuan is also an apothecary, grandmaster painter, tea expert, and senior to the visiting master teachers. The collapse of each assumption leaves him ashamed, but it also gives him a concrete reason to revise his judgment rather than cling to the feud. (Chapters 193, 222–226)

Apology and a new spear lineage

After Lu Xun concedes and resolves to improve as a teacher, Wang Chong brings Wang Chao to Zhang Xuan to apologize. Zhang Xuan recognizes that Wang Chao's repeated attacks were motivated by friendship and never crossed into unscrupulous violence, so he forgives him. He also permits Wang Chong to transmit the new spear art to his son. (Chapter 231)

The offer converts Wang Chao's remaining resentment into gratitude and admiration. His final state is not that of a defeated villain but of a specialist whose pride has been corrected by a better lineage and who is allowed to learn from it. The corpus does not record his later cultivation rank, master-teacher promotion, or departure from Tianxuan Kingdom. (Chapter 231)

Appearance and personality

Wang Chao carries himself with a proud, spear-like presence and is accustomed to the respect given to a star teacher. The story provides little stable facial or clothing detail, instead using his upright posture and haughty expression to convey his status. (Chapters 181, 215)

He is loyal, proud, and quick to judge through reputation. His friendship with Lu Xun leads him to interpret ambiguous events in Lu Xun's favor and to dismiss Zhang Xuan's broader explanations. At the same time, he has professional limits: he warns against a shortcut that would damage a student's foundations, recognizes genuine Spear Intent when he sees it, and accepts instruction once the evidence defeats his prejudice. Abilities and cultivation

Wang Clan spear art

Wang Chao is regarded as Hongtian Academy's leading spear instructor and an inheritor of the Wang Clan's secret spear art. The family normally transmits it only through its male line, though he teaches three moves to Mo Xiao at Lu Xun's request. Mo Xiao can execute those moves smoothly, demonstrating Wang Chao's ability to transmit them, but abandons the contest after seeing that their principles cannot match Zheng Yang's. (Chapters 7–8, 160, 215)

Wang Chao can recognize the formation and danger of Spear Intent. Watching Zheng Yang's nascent intent, he concludes that the clan art offers no counter at equal cultivation. His latest development is permission to learn the Heaven's Path-derived spear art Wang Chong obtained from Zhang Xuan; the story records his eagerness but does not show how far he masters it. (Chapters 221–231)

Teaching and judgment

As a star teacher, Wang Chao has produced recognized spear students and can assess broad strengths such as Mo Xiao's fundamentals. He also understands that forcibly raising cultivation can damage a student's future foundation. His limitations are equally clear: he cannot identify Zheng Yang's emotional blockage, repeatedly predicts the Teacher Evaluation incorrectly, and lets loyalty distort his interpretation of Zhang Xuan's expertise. Relationships

• Lu Xun: Lu Xun is Wang Chao's close friend. Wang supports his Teacher Evaluation, advocates for him in disputes, and lends clan spear techniques to his student. That loyalty motivates Wang's hostility toward Zhang Xuan, but it does not lead him past his moral boundaries. (Chapters 7–8, 160–231)
• Zhang Xuan: Wang initially belittles Zhang Xuan and repeatedly tries to turn public judgment against him. The evaluation and Wang Chong's testimony reveal Zhang Xuan as the source of a superior spear art, after which Wang apologizes and receives permission to learn it. (Chapters 7–8, 160–231)
• Wang Chong: Wang Chong is Wang Chao's father and his senior in the clan spear lineage. The father's decision to purchase and learn Zhang Xuan's art overturns Wang Chao's contempt, and he personally brings his son to apologize. (Chapters 215–231)
