Little Chick

Little Chick is the resurrected form of the Deathless Monarch, one of the Firmament's sovereigns and the original ruler of the Sky of Spirit Origin. He first appears as the sentient Dongxu Gourd, an artifactlike fruit planted by Ancient Sage Qiu Wu that attacks anyone attempting to harvest it. Rather than accept the cultivators who subdue him, the gourd chooses Zhang Xuan, takes in his blood, and enters his dantian. What initially looks like a troublesome treasure develops its own will, sacrifices itself for Zhang Xuan, and ultimately reconciles the memories and authority of the ancient Deathless Monarch with the irreverent identity it formed beside its new master. (Chapters 1,359–1,364, 2,020–2,022, 2,097–2,103, and 2,214–2,224)

At full restoration, Little Chick rules the Sky of Spirit Origin as a God Monarch and can assume the original form of a black Deathless Celestial Phoenix or a youthful human body. His resurrection, devouring, healing blood, and command of deathless flames make him extraordinarily difficult to destroy, but none is absolute: resurrection requires time and energy, repeated exposure to the same flame produces no further advancement, malignant gray energy can defeat his regeneration, and even at his peak he acknowledges a large gap between himself and the strongest beings in the Firmament. (Chapters 2,102, 2,179–2,180, 2,195–2,196, 2,215–2,224, 2,233, and 2,263–2,264)

Biography

The gourd that chose Zhang Xuan

The being later called Little Chick awakens beneath a concentrated spirit vein as the Dongxu Gourd. He immediately shatters Zhang Xuan's spatial restraint, withstands the Lingxu Sword without a mark, and batters both Zhang Xuan and his clone. Luo Xuanqing and his companions eventually exhaust the gourd, but he tears through their spatial bubble, pierces Zhang Xuan's palm to absorb his blood, and voluntarily dives into Zhang Xuan's dantian. The choice overrides the expectations of the expedition: the cultivator who did not intend to claim the treasure becomes the one the treasure acknowledges. Qiu Wu later explains that he had found and planted the gourd's seed for later generations, though he does not live to see what it becomes. (Chapters 1,359–1,364)

Inside Zhang Xuan's dantian, the gourd remains sentient, gluttonous, and difficult to direct. He consumes lightning tribulations that would otherwise threaten Zhang Xuan and absorbs powerful artifacts, including the Goldenspirit Lock, to break through seals or remove an enemy's equipment. These acts make him useful long before his identity is understood, but his assistance is governed by appetite rather than disciplined combat. His habit of swallowing external power foreshadows both his later advancement and the internal space with which he can shelter people during an ascent between worlds. (Chapters 1,378–1,379, 2,019, and 2,103)

A chick in the Azure

After devouring a Semi-Divinity artifact, the gourd's shell finally releases a tiny yellow chick. The new body retains no clear memory of its origin, although Little Chick insists that he was once a legendary beast who ruled the lands. He can recover rapidly but initially cannot fly, lift an immortal corpse, or meaningfully hurt an enemy. He accepts the name Little Chick only after rejecting Zhang Xuan's more embarrassing suggestions, creating an identity separate from both the gourd and the sovereign whose memories remain sealed. (Chapters 2,020–2,022)

Little Chick discovers that being burned to death by the Nine-headed Fiery Phoenix makes him rise from his charred shell at Heavenly High Immortal realm. The same fire works only once, and his ordinary fighting ability remains far below what his cultivation suggests, so Zhang Xuan initially relies more on his mouth than his claws. Little Chick can enlarge that mouth to swallow artifacts or opponents hundreds of times his size. He consumes the Blackback Tortoise whole, forces the beast to submit, and releases bathwater whose vitality repairs the tortoise's severe injuries almost instantly. The healing liquid is potent in the Azure but loses much of its effect under the Firmament's higher laws. (Chapters 2,022, 2,039, and 2,104)

Sacrifice, ashes, and Godhood

When Kong shi's clone attacks at Starchaser Palace, Little Chick swallows the God-level enemy to buy Zhang Xuan time. The clone cuts him apart and burns every piece to ash, but the delay lets Zhang Xuan complete his breakthrough. Zhang Xuan refuses to dismiss this as the loss of a replaceable beast: he regards Little Chick as a companion and brother who chose to die for him. Golden flames remain alive within the ashes, and the Aura of Divinity drawn through the Deathless altar gives that life enough power to reconstruct his body at Godhood. (Chapters 2,097–2,101)

The revival exposes a progression mechanism that neither of them yet fully understands. The God Ordeal directs its lightning and dark flames at Little Chick as well as Zhang Xuan, and surviving it raises the chick another stage. He can also assimilate the Azure's corrosive air of degeneration, turning a force that destroys other cultivators into nourishment and recovery. After the ordeal, he swallows Zhang Xuan's storage ring and everyone inside it, preserving them through the violent passage to the Firmament. These events establish that apparent death is not the end of his life, but they do not yet reveal the origin or conditions of that power. (Chapters 2,100–2,104)

God King and the return of the Deathless Monarch

Little Chick's next death occurs in the Lucid Lunar Lake. He later awakens at God King realm and promptly swallows an ordinary God King, demonstrating that his offensive ability has begun to catch up with his cultivation. He can strip a swallowed weapon of its Soul Imprint, partially transform his body, and survive a spatial vortex that endangers other God Kings. Zhang Xuan also connects Little Chick's blood with his own deathless body: wounds can recover with astonishing speed so long as the soul is not destroyed. Even so, corrosive gray energy in the ruins of Spirit Origin Royal City suppresses the same regeneration, showing that the deathless constitution has a counter. (Chapters 2,179–2,180, 2,195–2,196, and 2,219)

The decisive recognition comes when Little Chick swallows a stone phoenix carrying the former Deathless Monarch's will. A colossal black phoenix emerges and explains that the sovereign's body and soul can die, after which he will rise from the ashes; during the vulnerable rebirth, the body seals its memories until its cultivation is strong enough to protect itself. The old will condemns Zhang Xuan for contracting the reborn sovereign, but the present Little Chick rejects that judgment and protects the person he regards as master. The conflict shows that the resurrected will is not merely an empty continuation: his years with Zhang Xuan have produced loyalties and choices that the earlier personality cannot erase. (Chapters 2,214–2,215)

The old will submits after seeing Luo Ruoxin's crimson pendant. It recognizes the blood within as belonging to the Deathless Monarch's former master, Luo Ruoxin's father, and transfers that recognition to Zhang Xuan. Little Chick then returns to the ruins of Spirit Origin Royal City, absorbs the power left there after his defeat decades earlier, and reunites sealed memories with his newer will. Restoration returns him to the Deathless Monarch's peak and transforms him into a tall, slightly thin youth, yet his first act is to call Zhang Xuan master. He also uses a single drop of blood to rebuild the body and cultivation of his guardian Feng Yao. (Chapters 2,215–2,224 and 2,264)

Sovereign of Spirit Origin

Restored as ruler of the Sky of Spirit Origin, Little Chick accompanies Zhang Xuan into the conflict among the heavens. He blocks God Monarch shockwaves, explains Kong shi's Spring and Autumn technique, and candidly admits that he is much weaker than Kong shi and Luo Ruoxin despite recovering his peak. When Zhang Xuan challenges the rulers of the other Skies for recognition, Little Chick immediately concedes to his master; the acknowledgement of his Seal of Supreme Monarch helps Zhang Xuan draw on the Anima of Yearning of the Sky of Spirit Origin. (Chapters 2,231–2,233 and 2,263)

During Vicious's final assault, Little Chick leads the other God Monarchs into battle, transforms into the Deathless Celestial Phoenix, and helps stabilize one of the Firmament's four extremities while Zhang Xuan seeks a lasting solution. His resistance cannot overcome Vicious's malignant energy, but it buys time and preserves the world long enough for Zhang Xuan to transcend the God Monarch realm. Little Chick survives the crisis and later sends Deathless Phantasmagoric Feathers and Deathless Celestial Phoenix blood to Zhang Xuan and Luo Ruoxin's wedding. He remains proudly loyal and comically preoccupied with finding new ways to die so that resurrection might raise his cultivation again. (Chapters 2,264 and 2,267–2,268)

Appearance and personality

As the Dongxu Gourd, Little Chick is a lush green fruit whose most expressive gesture is shaking its rounded bottom. His first living form is an extremely small yellow chick with tiny wings, claws, and beady eyes. Advancing allows him to enlarge into a phoenixlike body while sometimes retaining the chick's incongruous head. At peak restoration, his true beast form is a vast black Deathless Celestial Phoenix; his human form looks sixteen or seventeen, tall and somewhat thin, with a youthful rather than extraordinarily handsome face. (Chapters 1,359–1,361, 2,020–2,022, 2,180, 2,215, and 2,224)

Boastfulness and appetite define his comic surface. Even without memories or fighting skill, he declares himself a legendary ruler, demands rare pills and artifacts as food, and expects Zhang Xuan to admire his appearance. He is quick to complain, enjoys watching his master display power, and continues using the undignified name Little Chick after becoming a sovereign. Beneath that vanity is a practical awareness of his limits: after recovering his memories, he openly tells Zhang Xuan when a fissure or stronger God Monarch lies beyond what he can handle. (Chapters 2,020–2,022, 2,233, 2,263, and 2,268)

His central trait is chosen loyalty. The reborn will's bond with Zhang Xuan is strong enough to oppose the authority and instincts of his own former self, and the restored Monarch keeps that bond after recovering both memories and power. He repeatedly places himself between Zhang Xuan and overwhelming enemies, not because a contract mechanically forces each decision, but because he regards their companionship as part of who he has become. (Chapters 2,097–2,101, 2,215–2,224, and 2,264)

Abilities and cultivation

Deathless resurrection and progression

The Deathless Monarch's defining power allows his body to die and his soul to dissipate without making that death permanent. A remnant of life persists and can rise from ashes when enough energy becomes available. While recovering, his memories seal themselves until his cultivation can withstand the dangers attached to his identity. His blood can pass a related deathless constitution to another person, permitting extreme physical regeneration unless the recipient's soul is destroyed. (Chapters 2,098–2,103, 2,180, 2,215, and 2,264)

Resurrection is not instantaneous invulnerability. Kong shi's clone keeps Little Chick dead long enough for his sacrifice to matter, and recovery requires the Deathless altar's energy. A flame or ordeal can advance his cultivation only on its first effective exposure, while malignant gray energy can prevent wounds from healing properly. Little Chick's later habit of contemplating novel deaths reflects the mechanism's promise, but not proof that every death guarantees advancement. (Chapters 2,022, 2,098–2,103, 2,219, and 2,268)

Devouring and internal space

Little Chick can expand his mouth far beyond his body's visible dimensions and swallow artifacts, energy, weapons, or living opponents. Digestion can break seals, erase a weapon's Soul Imprint, neutralize an enemy's equipment, or imprison a foe long enough to force submission. His internal space can also carry a storage ring and its occupants safely between worlds. At God King realm, he can swallow an ordinary God King whole; at lower cultivation, devouring a stronger opponent may only delay them and can expose him to destruction from within. (Chapters 2,019, 2,022, 2,039, 2,097–2,103, and 2,179–2,180)

Healing blood and vitality

Water stored within or produced by the gourd carries exceptional vitality. In the Azure, a bottle can repair injuries that would otherwise require prolonged treatment, and the Blackback Tortoise recovers immediately after being boiled in it. At full God Monarch strength, a drop of Little Chick's blood reconstructs Feng Yao's flesh and restores his phoenix cultivation. These effects depend on the target world's laws and the quality of Little Chick's current state; the ordinary bathwater becomes far less effective after he reaches the Firmament. (Chapters 2,020, 2,039, 2,104, and 2,224)

Phoenix form and God Monarch authority

After reclaiming the power in Spirit Origin Royal City, Little Chick returns to God Monarch realm and again bears the Seal of Supreme Monarch for the Sky of Spirit Origin. He can transform into the enormous Deathless Celestial Phoenix, spread black flames across the sky, withstand God Monarch-level shockwaves, and lend the recognition and Anima of Yearning of his territory to another cultivator. His original form also anchors one of the Firmament's four extremities during the world's collapse. (Chapters 2,224, 2,231–2,233, and 2,263–2,264)

The title does not place him above every sovereign. He states that Kong shi and Luo Ruoxin substantially surpass him, and his combined attack with six other God Monarchs cannot penetrate Vicious's malignant black hole. His authority is world-defining within its sphere, but superior heavenly fragments and energy that neutralizes the heavens can overcome it. (Chapters 2,233 and 2,264)

Relationships

  • Zhang Xuan: Little Chick chooses Zhang Xuan while still a gourd, lives in his dantian, and becomes his contracted beast. Their argumentative partnership deepens into mutual recognition as companions and brothers. Little Chick dies to buy him time, defies his old will to protect him, and retains the title “master” after becoming a God Monarch; Zhang Xuan in turn treats his life as irreplaceable. (Chapters 1,359–1,364, 2,020–2,022, 2,097–2,103, and 2,215–2,264)
  • Luo Ruoxin: Her pendant carries blood from her father, the Deathless Monarch's former master. The old Deathless will recognizes that blood and consequently acknowledges Zhang Xuan, while the restored Little Chick later fights beside Luo Ruoxin to preserve the Firmament. (Chapters 2,215–2,216 and 2,264)
  • Kong shi's clone: The clone destroys Little Chick's body after being swallowed, making him the direct cause of the chick's most consequential death. Little Chick's delay nevertheless enables Zhang Xuan's Godhood, and the ashes produced in that defeat become the basis of his next resurrection. (Chapters 2,097–2,103)
  • Feng Yao: A loyal guardian who waits in the ruins of Spirit Origin Royal City for the sovereign's return. Once restored, Little Chick repays that service by using his own blood to rebuild Feng Yao's body and phoenix powers. (Chapters 2,215–2,224)
  • Vicious: Vicious's malignant energy is a direct counter to deathless regeneration and later overwhelms the combined attacks of the God Monarchs. Little Chick nevertheless coordinates resistance, stabilizes the Firmament in phoenix form, and survives to see Zhang Xuan defeat him. (Chapters 2,219 and 2,264)
