Steve
Steve Werkling is an Extractor who trains beside Nick at Aegis. Serious, experienced, and strongest in warfare and leadership, he becomes the field leader of Nick's trainee squad but struggles when strict orders conflict with changing circumstances. He is distinct from the unrelated Anatomy employee also called Steve in Chapter 484. (Chapters 576–592)
Biography
From trainee to squad leader
Steve Werkling enters Aegis's trainee camp as an Early Expert nearing advancement, where his warfare and leadership education makes him the natural commander of a squad with Nick, Cynthia, and Mendor. On their first operation he advances to Late Expert, clears rooms while accepting surrender, and uses his teammates' visible fear to master his own anxiety. When Nick contains a target that orders required them to kill, however, Steve insists on obedience and clashes with the squad's judgment. The mission exposes both the value and rigidity of his command style rather than resolving the dispute in his favor. (Chapters 576–589)
Steve later plans to consume a Mid Elder, but Nick warns that his prospects require drastic improvement. The corpus does not follow his subsequent career or establish whether he reached that goal; Nick's much later remembrance places Steve among the deceased people of the old era. (Chapters 591–592 and 956)
Appearance and personality
During Aegis training, Steve is a small man with green hair and a serious expression. He is nervous about killing yet can regain clarity by recognizing that his teammates share the same fear. He values hierarchy, preparation, and mission discipline, becoming openly angry when Nick changes the plan and Mendor questions an order. The brown-haired Anatomy employee called Steve is a separate person whose shared given name does not justify merging their histories. (Chapters 484, 576, and 588–589)
Abilities and Zephyx
Steve advances from Early to Late Expert during training and has exceptional battle strength for his cohort. His Barrier can scan rooms for other Barriers and overlay warnings, while his speed lets him seize a Mid Veteran before the opponent can meaningfully react. Academically, he records sixty percent on level-two Warfare and Leadership and thirty percent on level-two Spectology. No personal synchronized ability or signature attack is identified. (Chapters 576 and 588)
Relationships
- Nick: Steve studies and deploys with Nick, respecting his power but confronting him when he departs from mission orders. Nick later gives him a blunt assessment of what must change before Steve attempts a Mid Elder. (Chapters 576–591)
- Cynthia and Mendor: Steve leads their squad and draws calm from Cynthia's professionalism under fear. Mendor's refusal to execute the surrendered Specter directly challenges Steve's command authority. (Chapters 588–589)
Items
- Steve uses an Aegis Barrier for scanning, communication, and defense. No named weapon or personal artifact is established for him. (Chapters 588–589)
