Jonathan

Jonathan is the red-haired Cycle Extractor who is captured and recruited by Dark Dream alongside Kiara. He is not Jonathan Leery, the much later Big Gourmand representative: the early Jonathan is explicitly dead centuries before Leery appears, and the source supplies no family name or connection between them. (Chapters 143, 341, and 801–803)

Biography

Revenge, capture, and a new employer

Jonathan initially treats Cycle's meeting with bored irreverence, but the deaths of coworkers turn that posture into fury and a demand for revenge. He joins Cycle's operation against Dark Dream and is captured with Kiara. As a Late Newbie facing a defeated employer and uncertainty for his family, he accepts Wyntor Melfion's offer of safer, better-paid work. Dark Dream assigns him to the Fog and identifies him as the employee closest to becoming a John, showing that the coerced transition develops into a position of trust and advancement. (Chapters 143–159 and 193)

Work with the Bleeding Lady and death

Jonathan's composure becomes clearest when he teaches Nick how to work with the Bleeding Lady. Terrified beneath his calm voice, he lets her cut his wrist and torso, reads signs of escalation, quietly prepares Nick to defend himself, and prevents panic from turning a routine session lethal. Outside the unit he admits the pain and explains that screaming only excites her further. This expertise protects his new chief and establishes practical knowledge Cycle left to Dark Dream. Jonathan later dies off page; Chapter 341 confirms his death without naming a cause. (Chapters 173–174 and 341)

Appearance and personality

Jonathan is a young red-haired man. He first appears laid-back, tilting his chair and rolling his eyes at authority, yet grief produces explosive anger strong enough to break part of a table. Under mortal pressure he can conceal fear, improvise, and speak reassuringly, making his casual exterior compatible with real professional discipline. (Chapters 143–144 and 173–174)

Abilities and Zephyx

Jonathan is a Late Newbie when recruited. Like Kiara, he has the Bleeding Lady's low-cost power to add a cutting effect to a weapon or part of his body. The source confirms the shared ability but does not show a distinct signature application for him. His most demonstrated skill is procedural rather than supernatural: controlled movement and emotional restraint around a volatile Specter. (Chapters 158–159 and 173–174)

Relationships

  • Kiara: The two share Cycle loyalty, capture, Bleeding Lady-derived abilities, and eventual employment at Dark Dream. (Chapters 143–159)
  • Nick: Jonathan moves from Nick's captured opponent to his employee and instructor in a hazardous containment session. (Chapters 157–159 and 173–174)
  • Bleeding Lady: Jonathan understands her warning signs and endures her cuts to keep a work session controlled. (Chapters 173–174)

Items

  • No notable personal items: Jonathan uses standard Extractor equipment, but the corpus assigns him no named or distinctive personal object. (Chapters 143–193)
