Gyeoul's Memory Crystal is a palm-sized recorder that Gyeoul prepares as a farewell gift for Yu Jitae, preserving their final family trip for the human she fears will otherwise forget her.
History
A costly plan to preserve the stars
Gyeoul searches for a second-hand 5Y crystal and commits her entire $3,500 savings, only to receive a brick from a scammer. After her family helps recover the money, Bom explains that Gyeoul wants to record another stargazing trip because her childhood visit left such a strong impression. The explanation hides the gift's intended recipient, but establishes that the purchase is not casual collecting: Gyeoul has been saving to turn a future family experience into a lasting record. (Chapters 322 and 324)
Recording the last trip
Gyeoul eventually presents Yu Jitae with the palm-sized crystal and explains the asymmetry behind the gift: a dragon remembers forever, whereas he may forget the hatchlings after they separate. Its lens and holographic display let her begin recording them together immediately. During the trip, the Protector serves as cameraman, filming the family, their preparations, and the meteor shower with Yu Jitae as the central subject. Gyeoul then removes the storage component, sets it into a necklace, and gives it to him with an earnest warning not to lose it. (Chapters 378–379 and 381)
Farewell and destruction
Before leaving Earth, Gyeoul asks Yu Jitae to watch the crystal whenever he misses her. He continues wearing the necklace afterward but deliberately refuses to view it because the attachment it embodies threatens his resolve to die. When the descending Guillotine crushes the necklace and shatters the crystal, its stored scenes force their way into his mind; the ordinary voices, smiles, and falling stars break through his suicidal exhilaration and make him want to live. Abilities and properties
- A memory crystal records mana as stored information. This 5Y model is palm-sized, has a camera lens, and projects a holographic screen while recording. (Chapters 322, 324, and 378)
- It is a consumable artifact with limited use, although the exact recording capacity and reason for that classification are not specified. (Chapters 322 and 378)
- Its storage component can be detached and mounted in a necklace without losing the recorded material. (Chapter 381)
- Shattering the crystal releases its recorded memories directly into Yu Jitae's mind. Whether this is a standard property or depends on the circumstances of its destruction is not explained. (Chapter 397)
