Gyeoul's Keepsake Necklaces
Gyeoul's Keepsake Necklaces are successive handmade gifts that preserve the bond between Gyeoul and Yu Jitae through exchanged traces, then through stored memory.
History
Exchanged traces
For Yu Jitae's birthday, Gyeoul gives him a blue cord woven from her hair and bearing one of her scales. She wears a matching keepsake containing a strand of his black hair, with Bom helping make the exchange secure. The gifts give Gyeoul a portable sign of attachment and give Yu Jitae an unusually personal reminder of the child he is learning to protect. (Chapter 64)
Dissolution and replacement
As Gyeoul approaches shedding, the pre-shedding hair and scale in Yu Jitae's necklace begin returning to mana; the cord snaps during his fight beneath the ice crystal and interrupts his impulse to kill a helpless cub. A later necklace holds Gyeoul's Memory Crystal, preserving another form of her connection to him. Yu Jitae continues wearing it after the hatchlings leave, until it is crushed while he deliberately lowers his resistance to a lethal attack. (Chapters 167, 381, 390, and 397)
Abilities and properties
- The first pair uses Gyeoul's hair and scale for Yu Jitae's necklace and Yu Jitae's hair for Gyeoul's, making each keepsake physically reciprocal. (Chapter 64)
- Material shed by a dragon returns to mana, so the original scale-and-hair pendant cannot remain permanent as Gyeoul nears her first shedding. (Chapter 167)
- The later necklace carries a Memory Crystal, giving the keepsake a record-bearing function as well as sentimental value. (Chapters 381 and 390)
