Xiao Chang’en

Xiao Chang’en is the dying Xiao Clan Lord who trades control of the clan's Spirit Lake for Meng Hao's protection and spends his remaining strength securing a future for his descendants.

Biography

A clan without an heir

Chang’en leads a small cultivation clan whose survival depends on a Spirit Lake. His mid Foundation Establishment cultivation once made that position defensible, but age has brought his lifespan close to its end, and the clan has no successor at the same level. Xu Luodi and the nearby clans exploit that weakness by preparing to seize the lake. Chang’en looks outside the local balance of power and invites Meng Hao as a Shaman cultivator whose plant minion might give the Xiao Clan a chance. (Chapters 167–169)

When the confrontation begins, Chang’en's hope falters because Meng Hao's own cultivation seems too low to oppose Xu Luodi. Even so, he stands between Xu and his guest after Meng Hao declares that the lake has been given to him. Xu sweeps Chang’en aside, but Meng Hao's vine and combat power overturn the expected result. Chang’en's astonishment becomes open joy because the victory supplies exactly the deterrence his clan lacks. (Chapters 170–171)

Guarding the benefactor

Meng Hao then enters secluded cultivation beside the lake. Chang’en understands that his descendants' safety now depends on preserving this new relationship, so he sits guard despite his failing body. When neighboring cultivators investigate the moonlight and attempt to break in, he fights them personally, coughing blood and considering whether to burn the little life force he has left. He knows even that sacrifice may not be enough, but refuses to abandon the post. Meng Hao emerges before Chang’en is overwhelmed and kills the intruders with a savagery that terrifies the entire Xiao Clan. (Chapters 172–174)

Chang’en accepts that fear as protection. He tells Meng Hao that the surviving reputation will deter enemies for decades—long enough, he hopes, for the clan to produce another Foundation Establishment cultivator. Meng Hao leaves two vines with Xiao Caifeng, giving the clan an additional defense. Chang’en bows in gratitude as the death aura around him strengthens; he expects to live no more than another year, but his final recorded concern remains the family's continuity rather than his own rescue. Appearance and personality

Chang’en is an old, increasingly weak man whose body carries a strong death aura. He is pragmatic about bargaining with an outsider and clear-eyed about the clan's vulnerability. At the same time, he is honorable toward Meng Hao after gifting the lake, personally guards his cultivation, and accepts injury to protect that trust. His horror at Meng Hao's killing does not erase his gratitude because he understands what the resulting fear means for his descendants.

Abilities and cultivation

Chang’en's abilities are modest by the wider cultivation world's standards and severely limited by age.

Mid Foundation Establishment cultivation

At full standing, mid Foundation Establishment power is enough to make the Xiao Clan significant among its neighboring clans. Near the end of his life, Chang’en can still fly, release his cultivation base, and fight several invading cultivators, but he is repeatedly knocked back and coughs blood. Burning life force could briefly increase his output, yet he judges that even this might not overcome the attackers. (Chapters 170–173)

Clan leadership and defensive judgment

His most consequential skill is strategic leadership. He recognizes that holding the lake without a successor is impossible, converts ownership into an alliance with Meng Hao, and later uses Meng Hao's reputation as a deterrent rather than asking him to remain indefinitely. This plan does not make Chang’en a combat equal to Xu Luodi; it gives the clan time to develop one. (Chapters 167–175)

Spirit Lake stewardship

Chang’en controls the Xiao Spirit Lake at the start of the arc and can transfer that claim to Meng Hao. The lake supports cultivation and attracts rival clans, making it both the Xiao Clan's resource and its central vulnerability. It is not an innate ability, and after the gift Chang’en treats it as Meng Hao's property. (Chapters 167 and 171)
