Nan'er is Zhang Wenfang's young son, brought across the sea in the hope that Footloose Sect will give the declining Zhang Clan a future.

Biography

Journey under threat

Nan'er travels on his mother's clan ship while the Zhang household faces maritime enemies and declining power. His safety is one reason Zhang Wenfang takes the risk of sheltering Meng Hao: an unknown expert is dangerous, but the clan badly needs protection and future connections. (Chapters 632–634)

Meng Hao saves the ship from its pursuers and continues toward Footloose territory with the family. Nan'er is not a combatant in these scenes; the adults' decisions and sacrifices exist partly to get him safely to recruitment. (Chapters 634–636)

The impossible acceptance

At Footloose Sect, Zhang Wenfang submits Nan'er for evaluation despite uncertainty and humiliation from her estranged Xu relatives. What follows is unprecedented: all Nine Valley Lords choose him. The result is not evidence of nine independently discovered supreme talents. Patriarch Reliance secretly interferes, turning the recruitment into a favorable outcome for the child and a comic display of overwhelming hidden authority. (Chapters 637–639)

Nan'er therefore leaves the journey with access to Footloose Sect and a path beyond the Zhang Clan's immediate weakness. The text does not yet show which valley he ultimately follows or what adult cultivator he becomes.

Appearance and personality

Nan'er is a young boy. The supplied chapters give little independent temperament because he remains under his mother's protection. He is compliant through danger and recruitment, while the adults project their hopes onto his future.
