Zhang Wenfang

Zhang Wenfang is the widowed leader of a declining sea clan who gives the wounded Meng Hao passage and later seeks a future for her son Nan'er.

Biography

A calculated act of shelter

Zhang Wenfang encounters Meng Hao at sea while her clan is already vulnerable. Although his condition and unknown identity make him dangerous to shelter, she brings him aboard, gives him a private cabin, and supplies pills, food, spirit stones, and the Zhang Clan's inherited sea map. Her kindness is genuine but not naïve: she hopes that treating a mysterious expert well may give her household protection against mounting threats. (Chapter 632)

The gamble is tested when Liu cultivators pursue the ship. Zhang Wenfang invokes Meng Hao as an honored guest, tries negotiation, and joins her Foundation Establishment guards once the ship's defense fails. Meng Hao's intervention saves the clan and validates her decision. She kneels in thanks and invites him to continue as escort rather than pretending the rescue created authority over him. Choosing the Zhang name

At Footloose Sect territory, Zhang Wenfang meets Xu Wende, the elder brother from whom she became estranged after marrying against the Xu family's wishes. He insults her late husband and declining clan. She refuses to retreat into her birth identity, answering that she is Clan Leader Zhang Wenfang. The declaration makes her widowhood and leadership chosen obligations, not merely circumstances imposed upon her. (Chapter 636)

Her next priority is Nan'er's admission to Footloose Sect. She accepts humiliating uncertainty because opposing the sect would endanger the guards and child she is responsible for. Through Patriarch Reliance's concealed interference, every one of the Nine Valley Lords accepts Nan'er. Zhang Wenfang departs with her son's prospects transformed and parts from Meng Hao with gratitude. (Chapters 637–639)

Appearance and personality

Zhang Wenfang is a beautiful, radiant woman dressed in a seafaring silk jacket and skirt. Anxiety is often visible beneath her composure. She combines compassion with risk assessment, accepts personal humiliation when resistance would hurt dependents, and fiercely maintains the clan identity she chose after marriage.

Abilities and cultivation

Great-circle Foundation Establishment

She has reached the great circle of Foundation Establishment and can join other clan cultivators in defending the ship after its protective barrier breaks. The text does not give her a named offensive spell, and Meng Hao—not Zhang Wenfang—decides the battle against the Liu pursuers.

Maritime command and negotiation

Her strongest demonstrated expertise is leadership under unequal power. She controls supplies and passage, reads the strategic value and danger of a stranger, attempts to deter pursuers through status, and keeps the clan coordinated during flight. These are learned command skills, not supernatural abilities.
