Biography

Guide to the East Pill Division

Bai Yunlai meets Fang Mu as an ordinary incoming apprentice alchemist and gives him the practical education that formal initiation does not provide. He explains the East Pill Division's hierarchy, valleys, testing customs, social taboos, and the reason Meng Hao's name provokes hostility. He records catalysis results and guides Fang Mu through the Celestial Land, using an extensive network of acquaintances to translate a vast institution into specific next steps. (Chapters 211–214)

His most consequential early help is finding Fang Mu a real pill-concocting opportunity as Li Tao's assistant. The opening gives Meng Hao access to practice, procedures, and customers that plant identification alone cannot supply. Bai does not create Fang Mu's alchemical talent; he removes the social and administrative barriers that would otherwise delay its recognition. (Chapter 215)

Building Fang Mu's commission network

After Fang Mu becomes a master alchemist, Bai turns isolated success into a functioning practice. He distributes pills, finds clients, arranges commissions, sets expectations, and uses successful results such as Ding Yong's breakthrough as credible promotion. When Inner Sect demand surges, he manages the order limit and pricing so that Fang Mu can continue refining instead of spending all his time negotiating. His value lies in trusted information flow: clients believe Bai can reach Fang Mu, and Fang Mu trusts Bai to filter the clients. (Chapters 222–225)

That trust is tested when Liu Yanbing demands preferential access beyond the three-order limit. Bai refuses to break the rule and absorbs humiliation rather than disrupt Fang Mu's system. Fang Mu intervenes and invokes the Pill Blacklist to protect him. The episode changes their partnership from useful convenience into reciprocal loyalty: Bai has defended Fang Mu's work when doing so is personally costly, and Fang Mu publicly ensures that his manager cannot be abused without consequence. Pill Auction and Pill Cauldron

Bai encourages Fang Mu to enter the Pill Auction and becomes the intermediary for the anonymous Bedevilment Pill. Carrying the pill lets him observe the market's response without immediately exposing its maker. From the quality of the work and the circumstances surrounding Fang Mu, he realizes that his patron is Grandmaster Pill Cauldron. Bai keeps the identity secret, reports the pill's explosive fame, and continues operating as the discreet bridge between the hidden grandmaster and the division around him. (Chapters 227–236)

His discretion matters because Pill Cauldron's reputation is larger than Fang Mu's public rank. Premature disclosure would attract sect politics and attention that neither man can fully control. Bai's contribution is therefore not merely flattery or salesmanship; it is information security maintained through personal loyalty in a culture where reputation determines access. Later cultivation journey

Many years later, Bai Yunlai is an old man in his declining years rather than a high-level cultivator preserved by power. He stands with the Violet Fate Sect at the Ancient Dao Lakes, where Meng Hao recognizes the former apprentice who once seemed to know every person and rule in the East Pill Division. Their reunion measures the different rewards of their paths: Meng Hao has become a feared great power, while Bai's achievements remain human-scale relationships and service. (Chapters 716–717)

Before leaving the sect, Meng Hao visits Bai personally and gives him Spirit Stones and medicinal pills. The gift is not payment for one commission but repayment for the infrastructure of friendship that supported Fang Mu before anyone knew his true potential. Appearance and personality

Bai is initially an average-sized man of about thirty, with the approachable bearing of someone accustomed to welcoming newcomers. By the Ancient Dao Lakes he is visibly old and near the later part of his life. The contrast reflects limited cultivation longevity rather than a disguised transformation. He is cheerful, talkative, flattering, and extraordinarily well informed. His sociability is a practical skill: he remembers people, knows who has an opening, understands which rules are formal or social, and makes introductions at the right time.
