Mio

Mio is the oldest and informal leader of the five dark-haired Witches rescued with Alice Moore, Nia, Jenna, and Mollie. A former second-year student and half-Witch, she grows from traumatized captive into an exceptional healer, civic defender, and representative of Wolfe's second Pentacle.

Biography

Rescue and rebuilding

After liberation from captivity, Mio becomes the group's steady public voice. She helps turn the Den from refuge into settlement by shaping stone walls, roofs, warming charms, furniture, and a bunkhouse, while using Witch skills to calm distressed companions. Her own magical restoration is painful—repairing her pathways feels like her body is burning—and a temporary interruption of her bond-sense leaves her disoriented enough to ask that the connection be restored, even though she can still cast a cleaning-water spell. Mio does not treat safety as permission to forget other prisoners. She leads her group back into rescue work, helps free captives and secure a new unit, and repeatedly checks whether vulnerable newcomers are protected. When Wolfe offers advancement, she and Nia insist that the five remain together; the resulting Rank Two breakthrough and second-Pentacle formation give that chosen solidarity a formal magical structure. Healer and bonded Witch

Mio becomes especially skilled at treating curse scars, blindness, and other trauma that ordinary recovery leaves behind. She also summons a Flame-Winged Sparrow after having lost a previous Familiar, combining renewed personal attachment with her expanding responsibilities. Her account of the Servant Bond remains deliberately complicated: she acknowledges its compulsive influence while explaining to deserters that it gave her abused group safety, power, and a future they had been denied. By Rank Three, Mio is named among Forest Grove's best healers. During a refugee crisis she advises defensive planning, analyzes why civilians are being drafted, explains her own persecution as the child of a human father, and purifies acidic river water before joining Nia and Mary on a field mission. Healing in her hands is therefore both clinical and political: it preserves lives while making displacement and coercion harder to exploit. (Chapters 522–529 and 532)

Defence, relief, and representation

Mio later serves as a patrol leader in the defence office, maintaining maps and radios and converting regional reports into ammunition and deployment decisions. She joins relief operations and trains guards in mobile suppression and in-flight targeting designed to mediate threats without unnecessary harm. Her progression through Awakening and Saint rank expands the scale of her duties without erasing the collaborative habits formed during captivity. When the original Pentacles are asked to divide civic representation, Mio calls herself the second Pentacle's self-appointed head and sole extrovert and proposes distributing the group among representatives. The joke is characteristic, but the decision is serious: she uses her willingness to speak not to dominate her quieter sisters, but to preserve their shared influence within Forest Grove's evolving government. Appearance and personality

Mio has long black hair and is one year older than the other rescued Witches. No reliable eye colour or exact height is given. She is socially confident, teasing, and candid enough to discuss the uncomfortable influence of the Servant Bond; as the group's informal leader and later “sole extrovert,” she often voices decisions that the others have already made together. Her warmth coexists with tactical realism and memories of severe captivity. (Chapters 133, 285, 528, 699, and 1133)

Magic, skills, and limitations

Healing and support magic

Mio treats curse scars, damaged eyes, and severe trauma, eventually ranking among Forest Grove's best healers. She can soothe distress, cast cleaning-water magic, and purify contaminated river water. Her early pathway restoration is intensely painful, and expertise does not make every injury reversible; her work is repeatedly presented as careful treatment rather than effortless regeneration. Earthworking, defence, and leadership

She is an accomplished artisan who shapes settlement structures, furniture, and practical charms. Later she handles defensive maps, radios, refugee planning, ammunition strategy, and nonlethal mobile-suppression training. Flame-Winged Sparrow and bond limits

Mio's summoned Familiar is a Flame-Winged Sparrow that later evolves into a large Rank Two bird with an ashy, smoke-like black appearance and an approximately three-metre wingspan. Its rank is distinct from Mio's. Likewise, the Servant Bond strengthens and coordinates her group but carries a compulsive influence that Mio herself recognizes; temporary loss of bond-sense causes acute disorientation.
