Paul Bacchus

Paul Bacchus is a British S-rank ability user who serves as the principal defender on Hwaya Eleni Mastiford's Windermere team. His mana strengthens shields rather than other weapons, focusing his combat role on intercepting attacks and protecting his companions. (Chapters 90, 94, and 98–99)

Biography

Windermere expedition

Paul joins Hwaya, Mike Dellon, and healer Emily Brown in exploring the Graveyard Over the Lake Field Dungeon. Because rival rankers side with Joshua Brightman, Paul initially has to hold the front alone while Hwaya and Mike attack from range. Kang Shin's arrival supplies the missing close-range offense, and Paul welcomes him, asks about his martial technique, and continues supporting Hwaya despite the political split among Britain's rankers. When the dungeon's giant toothsaw appears, Paul immediately pushes Mike out of its path and blocks the vibrating saw-snout until Shin drives it back. A second boss's song briefly clouds Paul's mind, but Shin's Warcry restores him; Paul resumes guarding the party, jumps into the lake to rescue members of Brightman's team, and brings two rankers back to the ship. He remains alive and fighting when last observed, though the selected evidence does not establish his later fate. (Chapters 98–99)

Appearance and personality

Paul is a man in his forties and a dual-shield wielder. The corpus does not state his hair color, eye color, height, clothing, or the physical design of his shields. (Chapter 90)

He is friendly, patriotic, and protective. Hwaya trusts him because he prioritizes Britain rather than personal advantage, while his easy joking with Mike and curiosity about Shin's technique make him approachable outside combat. Powers and abilities

Paul can channel mana into shields, giving him enough defensive power to serve as the sole front-line guard for Hwaya's original four-person team. He uses two shields and understands how the point of impact changes the force he must absorb. His ability is specialized: he cannot similarly reinforce other weapon types, and the corpus does not show a named shield technique or ranged attack. (Chapters 90 and 94)

His defenses are strong but not absolute. The giant toothsaw's mana-strengthened, vibrating snout begins to break through his shield until Shin attacks its eye.
