Kim Ji-soo

Kim Ji-soo, known as Exile, is a young Awakener forced to develop Phantom Torture under captivity. The ability transmits the sensation of injury without producing the wound itself, making her useful to captors who want pain without fatal damage. Her later story follows an orphan survivor reclaiming her name, hatred, and responsibility before confronting another cycle's version of herself. (Chapters 290–291 and 294–297)

Biography

Coercion, exile, and the other Ji-soo

Ji-soo awakens Phantom Torture while imprisoned and is compelled to inflict simulated mutilation on other captives. The coercion frames every use as a lesser evil: refusal risks real injury or death, while compliance leaves pain, guilt, and complicity without visible wounds. Uehara Shino's potions help conceal or repair the surrounding physical damage, deepening the gap between what outsiders can see and what Ji-soo and her victims experience. (Chapters 290–291)

She later survives among orphan groups, carries the anger and guilt of that history, and insists on owning the name Kim Ji-soo rather than remaining only “Exile.” The sequence culminates when a potential or past Ji-soo encounters the current-cycle Ji-soo. Their identical appearance does not make them one continuous person; the meeting forces discarded possibility and lived reality to argue over which self has the right to define their shared wounds. Appearance and personality

Ji-soo is a young woman whose compared cycle-selves appear physically identical; no more stable identifying features are emphasized. Her emotional presentation changes more sharply than her body. She begins terrified and coerced, then becomes hardened, angry, burdened by guilt, and determined to name herself. That determination does not eliminate fear or trauma, but it prevents captors and alternate possibilities from possessing the meaning of her identity. (Chapters 290–291 and 294–297)

Abilities and skills

Phantom Torture transmits the felt experience of cuts, mutilation, and other injuries without creating the corresponding bodily wound. It can produce extreme suffering while leaving little visible evidence, though unusually powerful targets can resist its effects. Ji-soo awakens the ability under torture and is immediately forced to use it; no later named upgrade or broader formal stage is established.
