Yu Ji-won

Yu Ji-won is the National Road Management Corps operations commander whose Mini-map turns people known to her into labeled pieces on a strategic map. First recruited by Undertaker as a deputy, she becomes both the alliance's most precise field coordinator and the Miko of Leviathan, an Outer God whose power gives color and distinction to a world she otherwise struggles to parse.

Biography

From deputy to national operations commander

Undertaker first identifies Ji-won as a silver-haired talent he began scouting in the fifth cycle to serve as his deputy in Samcheon World. Her unemotional calculations and aggressive deference to authority make her unsettling even to him, but those same qualities are valuable in an apocalypse where a delayed or sentimental order can destroy an expedition. She later becomes captain of the National Road Management Corps Operations Control Room, placing her awakened perception at the center of a national command structure rather than using it only for personal survival. (Chapters 18 and 103–106)

The Inunaki Tunnel operation demonstrates what that office means. Ji-won represents dozens of explorers as chess pieces, reports their routes and losses with exact timing, and remains outside the anomaly to preserve the map while Undertaker validates the final passage. During the Leviathan campaign, she scales the same method to thousands of Awakeners aboard Noah's Arks, compensating when the storm obstructs the Saintess's Clairvoyance. Her decisions make her an operational counterpart to the alliance's frontline fighters: she converts scattered lives into a picture on which coordinated action is possible. The submerged world and Mr. Matiz

When Leviathan grows into an Outer-God-level threat, Undertaker chooses Ji-won as its prospective Miko because she belongs to the peninsula's principal quasi-government institution and has exceptional resistance to perception manipulation. Establishing that bond sends him into her middle-school past, where he discovers that her apparent indifference is inseparable from severe face blindness. People blur together unless fixed by labels, scents, colors, or usefulness. Calling himself Mr. Matiz, he uses a deliberately blended perfume to give her one stable identity she can recognize and intervenes in a childhood she had never discussed with her adult companions. Seven years later, Ji-won recognizes Mr. Matiz by that fragrance even after an apocalypse has separated them. The reunion reveals that the water creatures surrounding her are not merely invaders: they express a world she has always perceived as submerged, with Leviathan supplying the distinctions that let people appear separate. Once Undertaker realizes that cultivated Aura is itself connected to Leviathan, the alliance abandons widespread Aura use to keep the god dormant. Ji-won accepts the loss of what looked like her greatest advantage, but rejects the claim that misfortune alone defines every power. She chooses to become Mr. Matiz's “error,” preserving a connection that Leviathan's totalizing perception cannot explain away. (Chapters 327–331)

Despot and the sea that carries humanity

Project Collapse later asks Ji-won to turn the very bond they feared into a controlled Fall. Wearing the school uniform associated with her first possession, she thanks Leviathan for granting color, scent, and the ability to distinguish people, then asks to keep the identities of Mr. Matiz and those precious to him. Her multicolored Aura contracts into her hand and she joins the Corrupted party under the alias Despot. The transformation is voluntary and strategically contained, but the scene also shows that devotion—not simple mental defeat—can connect a Miko to an Outer God. (Chapter 355)

In the final campaign, Ji-won no longer uses Leviathan's sea to drown an indistinguishable world. She spreads a seven-colored expanse of Aura beneath humanity's advance, supporting Undertaker and the combined alliance as they cross toward Transience. Later restored routes expose the pain beneath her controlled loyalty, including a life in which she kills Go Yuri for Mr. Matiz and accepts his refusal to dismiss the feeling behind that act as meaningless. These revelations do not excuse her choices, but they overturn the simple label of psychopath: she has deliberately built a narrow, fierce form of attachment and remains alive to choose what it supports. The restored route also places Ji-won's private responsibilities beside her apocalyptic role. Yoo Younghee is her grandmother, an elderly woman living with dementia whom Ji-won arranges care for while supporting herself; she is not Go Yuri and not proof that Yuri's false family identity was genuine. Ji-won's concern for Younghee and the labor surrounding that care show an attachment formed outside Mr. Matiz, even when face blindness and her controlled manner make conventional recognition difficult. Appearance and personality

Before Awakening, Ji-won has black hair and dark eyes and works as a professional middle-school model. Awakening turns her hair silver; as an adult it falls around her shoulders and becomes one of her most recognizable features. Her face is normally blank and composed, while smiles arrive and disappear with a slightly learned quality. Perfume is unusually important to her because scent gives people a stable distinction that faces often cannot. (Chapters 18, 320–321, 327, and 463)

Ji-won is exact, hierarchical, pragmatic, and intensely private. She delivers information with civil-service precision, hides both strengths and activation conditions, and flatters authority so meticulously that even Undertaker finds it alarming. Her tendency to model people as labeled pieces can make her decisions ruthless, but it is not proof that she lacks emotion. Around Mr. Matiz she becomes sarcastic, possessive, and capable of sulking, gratitude, fear, and carefully practiced tenderness. Her loyalty is not indiscriminate obedience; it is an attachment she repeatedly calculates, conceals, and finally chooses. (Chapters 103, 175, 287, 307, 329, 355, and 463)

Abilities and anomalies

Ji-won's capabilities do not follow a formal character-level ladder. Her development combines an awakened mapping ability, learned combat and Aura, an Outer-God connection, and a temporary Corrupted identity. These elements reinforce one another, but each retains specific conditions and risks.

Mini-map

Mini-map displays people Ji-won knows as labeled chess pieces on a physical map. Its true activation condition is that she has encountered a person once and knows the person's name; an encounter through SG Net can be sufficient, so direct physical proximity is not always required. She and the National Road Management Corps circulate false conditions to prevent enemies from understanding how easily she can mark them. Unknown or unidentified people remain a basic limitation, and the map supplies location rather than the full sensory and emotional information available through Clairvoyance. (Chapters 103–106 and 307)

The ability's range grows with Ji-won's own geographic experience. Undertaker travels with her across Eurasia so that more territory enters her usable map, and she later coordinates thousands of pieces during the Noah's Arks operation. In the Leviathan route she discovers an additional application: ordinary electronic watches placed over regions of the Mini-map display changing survivor totals. The function is powerful reconnaissance, but it appears only after her deeper connection to Leviathan and is not established as a universal feature she possessed in earlier cycles. Aura and Leviathan's Miko

Ji-won hides Aura reserves far beyond those of ordinary Awakeners. In one fifth-cycle account she suppresses that strength so completely that she chooses death rather than reveal her threat level before securing Undertaker's trust for a later life. The later Leviathan investigation explains why her mastery is exceptional: Aura is linked to the Outer God, and Ji-won has already become its Miko whether or not she consciously acknowledges the role. Her resistance to mental manipulation makes her a viable vessel, but possession still threatens to expand Leviathan's perception and authority through her. (Chapters 318–331)

Her Aura manifests through aquatic imagery, rising bubbles, colored water, and eventually a multicolored aurora. It can reinforce her body for combat, surround others, and reach battlefield scale. Ji-won's control is demonstrated when she condenses the aurora during her Fall and when her seven-colored sea supports the final advance. Its scale does not make it consequence-free: widespread Aura use can awaken Leviathan, leading Undertaker and Ji-won to ration or discontinue it until a safer confrontation is possible. Heartbeat bubbles

Ji-won can shape bubbles from her submerged perception and use them as an intimate sensory bridge. She sends the bubbles beneath Go Yo-il's skin, through muscle and bone, until they wrap his heart, then synchronizes her heartbeat to his. The link lets her read and experience his bodily and emotional rhythm through mediation suited to the underwater world she perceives. It is a focused connection between two people, not a general extension of Mini-map or proof that she directly reads every target's emotions. (Chapter 463)

Despot

Despot is Ji-won's Corrupted alias during Project Collapse. She enters the state deliberately after praying to Leviathan, and the galaxy-like Aura surrounding her gathers into her grasp. The transformation gives her a form suited to the alliance's campaign against Corrupted powers, but it has no shown numbered rank or independent technique set. Her later seven-colored support continues the abilities of Leviathan's Miko rather than replacing her ordinary identity with a permanently separate form. (Chapters 355 and 436)

Operations, concealment, and combat training

Even without anomalous power, Ji-won is an exceptional coordinator. She can run multi-team exploration, report minute changes without losing composure, and integrate maps with radio, Clairvoyance, and remote personnel. She also trains in several self-defense systems and habitually hides her own capabilities, weaknesses, and activation conditions. These are learned disciplines rather than stages in a supernatural ladder, but they make Mini-map useful at institutional scale and help her survive when revealing raw power would be strategically disastrous. • Undertaker: Ji-won serves him as deputy, adjutant, and operations commander, but the foundation of their bond is the childhood figure she calls Mr. Matiz. His seven-note fragrance lets her recognize him across separation, while her loyalty forces him to confront the difference between using a companion and accepting the attachment he helped create. • Noh Do-hwa: Do-hwa is Ji-won's direct superior in the National Road Management Corps. Ji-won translates Do-hwa's deployments into exact positions and reports, while her exaggerated salutes to Undertaker in Do-hwa's presence turn their efficient command relationship into a recurring contest of patience. • Go Yuri: Yuri's perception manipulation and Leviathan occupy competing domains.
