Zang Lang

Zang Lang is the scar-faced leader of the Fei Li Military Academy's senior commoners and one of the earliest military talents recruited by Zhou Weiqing. Their first clash begins over a protection-fee system but reveals a shared concern: commoner Jewel Masters are often forced to trade freedom for cultivation resources. Zang moves from guarding students through personal strength to leading a group that accepts Zhou as a brother, then develops through covert service in the ZhongTian Army and later work with the Peerless Battalion.

Biography

Defeat exposes the cost of commoner independence

Zang initially enforces a monthly fee in the commoner dormitory and challenges Zhou when the newcomer abolishes it. The fight ends decisively: Zang's fireballs, Fire Protective Armor, coordination, and dagger cannot overcome Spatial Rend, Blink, and Zhou's superior strength. His followers then explain that the money funds Zang's Skill Storing and equipment so that he can protect students who refuse patronage from nobles or the Skill Storing Palace. Zhou rejects the coercive method but understands the underlying problem, while Zang's followers' willingness to stand between them proves that his protection has been real. (Chapter 42)

After seeing Zhou offer his own class resources without demanding servitude, Zang represents forty-four unaffiliated senior commoners in asking for the same support. Zhou refuses a mere promise of loyalty and proposes Darkness Seals, forcing Zang to confront how closely this bargain resembles the bondage he opposes. Only sixteen remain willing after further discussion. Zhou then gives them more time while he attends the Heavenly Jewel Tournament, raising the standard from immediate need to a considered choice. Followers accepted as brothers

Zang returns when Zhou is expelled and prepares to leave Fei Li City. Only eleven companions come with him, and Zang responsibly asks whether Zhou can truly equip all twelve before they accept permanent Seals. The presence of several advanced Consolidating Equipment Masters answers the practical concern, but Zhou rejects the Seals anyway: those who came despite his political downfall have already proven enough, and he wants brothers rather than bound servants. That trust ends Zang's hesitation. He pledges himself as both brother and loyal soldier, then helps the group leave the city in protective formation. (Chapters 111–115)

On the journey north, Zang recommends the safer road around the Ghost Demon Forest, reads maps better than the tournament fighters, and organizes an orderly fortified camp. Although the party later enters the forest, his advice demonstrates the conservative judgment appropriate for protecting weaker members. Zhou subsequently orders Zang and the eleven graduates to enter the ZhongTian Army separately, earn commissions, train trusted soldiers, and await recall. Their value lies in growing as independent commanders rather than remaining a conspicuous personal entourage. (Chapters 116–118)

From embedded officer to Peerless trainer

As the Peerless Battalion expands, Zhou calls for Zang to assist Shangguan Fei'er with formations, operational efficiency, and military training for two new infantry forces. The assignment combines her exceptional combat instruction with the academy graduates' staff knowledge. Zhou later changes the covert plan to avoid making the graduates steal ZhongTian soldiers or become wanted criminals; instead, he arranges their official transfer into the Peerless Battalion as mid-level core officers. (Chapters 162, 187)

By the Crescent City campaign, Zang is counted among the academy-trained officers who survive the defense and eagerly accept the chance to work beneath Ming Yu. The supplied chapters do not describe his later individual post in detail, but his inclusion shows that the initial dormitory organizer has become part of the professional command cadre intended to restore the Heavenly Bow Empire. Appearance and personality

Zang is bald, approximately 1.8 metres tall, and broad-shouldered, with a long knife scar down the right side of his face. His commoner uniform, slow approach, piercing gaze, and deep metallic voice give him an oppressive presence among the students. In battle he remains coordinated enough to twist out of heavy impacts, though surprise breaks his usual calm when Zhou overwhelms him. (Chapter 42)

Pride, responsibility, and a desire for freedom shape his decisions. He reacts angrily when Zhou questions his honor, yet does not bind his companions to a choice they do not share and voices their material concerns before accepting lifetime service. He wants an exciting life in which his military gifts matter, but his route recommendations and camp discipline show that this is not simple recklessness. Once Zhou removes the threat of enslavement, Zang's guarded bargaining becomes fervent loyalty. (Chapters 47, 63, 112, 115–116)

Abilities and cultivation

Three-Jewel fire combatant

At first appearance Zang is an upper Shi-level, three-Jeweled Heavenly Jewel Master. His red-jade Physical Jewels grant Coordination, allowing agile landings and some diffusion of impacts, while his Elemental Jewels carry the Fire Attribute. He launches five fireballs as a ranged screen and follows behind them with a Consolidated dagger. His Fire Protective Armor forms a burning defensive ring that also threatens nearby attackers. These techniques make him dominant among ordinary students but fail against a same-Jewel opponent with much stronger bloodline power and higher-ranked control Skills. (Chapter 42)

Military expertise over personal power

Zang later remains a three-Jeweled Heavenly Jewel Master, while his eleven companions are three- or four-Jeweled Physical Jewel Masters. Their direct combat power is modest beside the Fei Li Battle Team, so Zhou protects them from unnecessary engagements. Their comparative advantage is military: map reading, route assessment, camp construction, formations, leadership, and troop training. The corpus does not establish a later cultivation breakthrough or show Zang using new personal Skills. (Chapters 115–118, 162)

Relationships

• Zhou Weiqing: Zang begins as Zhou's defeated rival, then recognizes in him a path by which commoner Jewel Masters can cultivate without serving nobles. Zhou's decision to accept the group without Seals turns their negotiated allegiance into personal loyalty.
• Shangguan Fei'er: Zang is assigned to supplement her infantry training with formations and operational knowledge, pairing her combat mastery with his academy specialization.
• Lin TianAo: Lin recognizes that Zang and his fellows are weak duelists but superior military graduates, and later carries Zhou's instructions for their official transfer from the ZhongTian Army.
• Ming Yu: Zang idolizes the Fei Li God General and eagerly joins the officers who will learn under his command after Crescent City's defense.
