Xiao Ru Se

Xiao Ru Se is Zhou Weiqing's childhood elder-sister figure and an accomplished Heavenly Bow officer. Unable to awaken a Power Jewel, she enters military school disguised as the male officer Xiao Se, building a career through archery and command before leading one of the largest resistance groups after the empire falls.

Biography

From rival officer to acting battalion commander

As Company Leader Xiao Se, Ru Se initially resents Shangguan Bing'er for receiving the Third Battalion command on the strength of being a Heavenly Jewel Master. She tries to displace Zhou as Bing'er's aide and, after his performance in the Fresh Recruit Tournament undermines that effort, challenges him to a forest archery duel. Her rapid fire and double-arrow salvos keep him pinned until he uses Stored Skills and Consolidated Equipment she cannot match. The fight reveals two hidden identities: Zhou recognizes Xiao Se as the girl who protected him in childhood, while Ru Se learns that the once powerless boy is now a Heavenly Jewel Master. Their renewed bond changes her priorities. She tries to steady him through a violent bodily transformation, counsels him to survive any national disaster because his lineage and talent could rally the empire, and supplies him with a superior Purple Dawn Bow and arrows. (Chapters 9, 15–19)

Ru Se's military value is independent of that relationship. During an ambush she keeps the soldiers organized, deploys infantry and archers around the attacking Jewel Masters, identifies the hidden archer as the critical target, and protects Bing'er despite their rivalry. After Bing'er concludes that she is not ready to command a battalion, Ru Se receives the acting post and takes over its daily work. The promotion fulfills part of Ru Se's stated ambition to prove that women can command and achieve political and military standing equal to men, even though she continues using the male disguise. (Chapters 19–21, 24–26)

Gathering the remnants of Heavenly Bow

Ru Se is stationed on the Kalise frontier when the capital falls. Her unit survives the defeat and becomes a resistance force of nearly six thousand soldiers hidden in remote hills, too weak for open reconquest but large enough to preserve organized opposition. When word reaches her that Zhou and Ming Yu have retaken Crescent City, she immediately joins them, provides a firsthand account of the invasion, and offers to contact the scattered remnants she knows. Her return turns isolated rebellions into manpower for the restored army and confirms the future she once described to Zhou: survival creates the chance to reverse national defeat. (Chapter 207)

Appearance and personality

Ru Se is seven years older than Zhou and has a jade-like face that lets her pass as a handsome young male officer. Her disguise is convincing enough that Bing'er and, years later, Shangguan Xue'er initially take Xiao Se for a man. The text contrasts that presentation with the female voice she uses among people who know her identity, but gives little detail about her uniform beyond her weapons. (Chapters 17–18, 207)

She is proud, ambitious, and intensely self-disciplined. Failing to awaken a Power Jewel does not end her goal; she trains in archery, studies at military school, and pursues promotion through skill. Early resentment makes her unfair toward Bing'er and Zhou, yet she can revise her judgment when evidence changes. In crisis she is brave and composed—willing to approach Zhou during his dangerous transformation, able to command through an ambush, and determined to preserve resistance after national collapse. Her loyalty is to both the empire and the people she regards as family. (Chapters 16–20, 207)

Abilities and cultivation

Xiao Ru Se reaches the second level of Heavenly Energy but fails to awaken a Power Jewel at sixteen, so she is not a Jewel Master and has no Consolidated Equipment or Stored Skills. Her combat ceiling is therefore far below a trained Heavenly Jewel Master: even excellent archery cannot overcome Zhou once he combines Blink, Fetters of Wind, Touch of Darkness, and the Overlord Bow. (Chapters 17–18)

Within ordinary military limits, she is an exceptional archer. She can fire arrows in very rapid succession, loose two accurately in one draw, change position while maintaining suppression, and use a Purple Dawn Bow at battlefield range. She teaches Zhou Rapid Fire Archery and can hinder a five-Jeweled Physical Jewel Master long enough to support troop movement. Her greater strength is command: she reads terrain and threats quickly, converts heavy infantry into a delaying screen, shifts archers to flanking fire, and issues calm orders while stronger individual fighters are overwhelmed. (Chapters 17, 19–20)

Relationships

  • Zhou Weiqing: Ru Se protected Zhou during childhood and continues to treat him as a younger brother. She trains, equips, and counsels him, then recognizes his return as the rallying point the occupied empire needs.
  • Shangguan Bing'er: Ru Se begins as Bing'er's rival for battalion command. Respect for Bing'er's character and concern for Zhou gradually turn competition into cooperation, and Bing'er ultimately hands her the acting command.
  • Mao Li: Mao Li is another Third Battalion company leader. Although he is personally closer to Bing'er, he and Ru Se work within the same command structure as authority transfers to her.
  • Ming Yu: Ming Yu's messages alert Ru Se's resistance group to the victory at Crescent City. She brings her soldiers and network of army remnants into the force he is organizing.

Items

  • Purple Dawn Bow: Ru Se uses the powerful military bow for rapid-fire and double-arrow techniques. She also gives Zhou a superior version made from five-hundred-year-old Stars Wood, with Magic Tenacious Snake sinew and matching titanium-tipped arrows, before the frontier march. (Chapters 16–19)
