Kou Rui

Kou Rui is a commoner student whose limited combat talent is offset by an instinct for intelligence work and a willingness to commit early to Zhou Weiqing. What begins as information gathering inside the Fei Li academy develops into professional battlefield reconnaissance, counterintelligence, and command of an elite Peerless Air Force formation.

Biography

Choosing a protector and making himself useful

Kou Rui enters the Fei Li Imperial Family Military Academy as a short, skinny commoner student specializing in intelligence gathering and spycraft. When senior students invade the dormitory and bully the freshmen, he protests despite lacking the offensive power to stop them. Zhou is the only roommate who decisively protects the group, and that act matters more to Kou Rui than rank or promises: he asks to follow Zhou because a suppressed commoner needs someone who will stand up when danger is real. His father taught him that rare opportunities must be seized, so he supports Zhou publicly even when other students consider the choice reckless. (Chapters 41–43 and 45–46)

Kou Rui immediately turns loyalty into work. He investigates the academy's noble families, warns Zhou about the Ye family's influence, and collects information about Principal Cai Cai and other political figures. Ming Hua recognizes the innovation in his entrance-exam answers on intelligence, guerrilla methods, and battlefield analysis, then formally assigns him to gather every classmate's cultivation, attributes, and Consolidating Equipment needs. He produces a complete twenty-nine-person file set quickly and efficiently, becoming Zhou's first administrative assistant rather than merely another admirer. (Chapters 45–47 and 52–53)

Zhou rewards that initiative with the first custom Consolidating Equipment Scroll given to the class. The Tyrant Bow addresses Kou Rui's specific weakness: Agility and Coordination suit scouting and precision but provide little direct attack, so the bow exchanges some of the Overlord Bow's force for greater speed while retaining an explosive effect. Kou Rui's visible reward also proves to the other commoners that Zhou's offer of support is real. Their relationship is therefore mutually causal from the start—Kou Rui's early trust gives Zhou a functioning information network, while Zhou gives him the weapon and confidence to turn overlooked attributes into a career. Staying to learn before following

Kou Rui helps organize Commoner Class One into a cohesive group. He and other student leaders protect Shangguan Bing'er from unwanted approaches, coordinate weaker classmates during physical training, and keep registration and intelligence flowing while Zhou travels to the Heavenly Jewel Tournament. When Zhou returns months later, Kou Rui is the first student to rush out and embrace him, and he reports that the class now responds to threats as one unit. (Chapters 54–64 and 111)

The fall of the Heavenly Bow Empire tests his commitment. Kou Rui initially insists on leaving the academy with Zhou because Zhou taught him self-respect and supplied his first Consolidated Equipment. Zhou refuses, arguing that Kou Rui needs the remaining three and a half years of education, but promises that the post of reconnaissance leader will remain open. Kou Rui struggles with the order, then accepts it. Delaying service is not a retreat from loyalty: it lets him acquire the theory and discipline needed to offer more than enthusiasm when the restoration begins. (Chapter 112)

Turning schoolcraft into wartime intelligence

Zhou ends the promised waiting period early when the Heavenly Bow restoration needs trained personnel. Kou Rui joins the campaign and conducts his first real field mission around Crescent City. Excited but disciplined, he enters in disguise, counts the garrison, studies guard rotations and reinforcements, sketches defensive positions, and reports verified facts without mixing them with tactical recommendations. That separation earns explicit praise as professional scouting and gives Zhou the reliable foundation for taking the city. (Chapters 194–195)

His responsibility expands after the capture. Kou Rui runs scouts, tightens gate inspections, catches dozens of infiltrators, watches Kalise troop concentrations, and warns that enemy delays probably mean they are awaiting Jewel Master reinforcements. After battles he supplies casualty and retreat estimates rather than celebrating without evidence. When Ming Yu assumes strategic command, Kou Rui chooses to remain near him rather than seek tournament glory, because learning from the Fei Li God General serves his goal of becoming a commander. Under that mentorship, he matures from an eager student into an intelligence officer whose reports shape army deployment and national planning. (Chapters 200–208 and 230)

Command in the restored empire

By Zhou's return from the XuanTian expedition, Kou Rui has reached five Jewels and leads a hundred-member Peerless Air Force response unit. His detachment approaches an unexplained energy signal from several directions, forms a semicircular aerial enclosure, and synchronizes its fire the instant he reacts to being pulled from the sky. The target is Zhou, who harmlessly returns every arrow, but the incident demonstrates the formation's readiness and dangerous discipline. Kou Rui immediately stops the follow-up, welcomes Zhou as his friend, then kneels to acknowledge him formally as commander. (Chapters 261–262)

He escorts Zhou to camp, delivers a concise account of the army's expansion and the strategic stalemate around Heavenly Bow City, and promptly notifies senior leadership of Zhou's return. His latest role combines all earlier stages: the loyalty of the dormitory follower, the information control of the academy assistant, the reporting discipline of the field scout, and enough personal cultivation to command an elite airborne unit. Appearance and personality

Kou Rui is introduced as a short, skinny seventeen-year-old. By the restoration campaign he still is not tall, but he looks shrewd and capable; dressed as a commoner for reconnaissance, he can approach occupied territory without advertising military status. His youthful excitement remains visible during his first field assignment and reunion with Zhou, though later reports and command behavior show much greater composure. (Chapters 41, 47, 194, and 261–262)

He is observant, energetic, loyal, righteous, and unusually willing to stake himself on his judgment of people. Early admiration for Zhou borders on fanaticism, but Kou Rui does not remain a passive devotee: he completes assignments promptly, accepts correction, distinguishes evidence from opinion, and stays at school when further training will make him more useful. His easy humor coexists with professional deference once he becomes an officer. (Chapters 43–53, 111–112, 194–230, and 261–262)

Abilities and cultivation

Kou Rui is a Physical Jewel Master whose Jewels combine Agility and Coordination. He begins with two Jewels and describes himself as a Mid Level Shi Stage practitioner; by his latest combat appearance he has reached five Jewels. He has no Elemental Jewels or Stored Skills, so his combat development depends on Physical Jewel enhancement, Consolidated Equipment, archery, flight equipment, and coordinated formations. Tyrant Bow and archery

The Tyrant Bow is a custom Consolidated bow derived from Zhou's Overlord Bow. Because sockets are unusable to a Physical Jewel Master, Zhou removes that feature, reduces the draw weight and raw attack power, adapts the design away from pure Strength, and raises its firing speed. The inherited explosive property supplies the offense Kou Rui's natural Jewels lack. The tradeoff is explicit: it does not match the Overlord Bow's power and cannot fuse Elemental Skills, so accuracy, rate of fire, and formation volleys remain essential. (Chapters 52 and 56)

As commander of a Peerless Air Force detachment, Kou Rui uses a Consolidated bow while airborne and can coordinate a hundred Jewel Masters into an immediate simultaneous volley. Their explosive arrows are expected to crater an area roughly one hundred meters across. This destructive potential depends on collective fire and identification discipline; Kou Rui's reflexive shot at Zhou shows that surprise can trigger a dangerous overreaction before visual confirmation. Scouting and intelligence work

Kou Rui's defining ability is not supernatural. He gathers social and military information, collates personnel files, scouts in disguise, diagrams defenses, estimates reinforcement timing and casualties, manages surveillance networks, and supports sand-table planning. His academy training emphasizes that commanders can decide well only from accurate intelligence. In the field, he avoids contaminating observations with his own tactical opinions, leaving decisions to command while still identifying likely enemy intentions when asked. The limitations are those of any intelligence system: incomplete access can leave an enemy's exact plan unknown, spies can still pass enhanced checks, and estimates depend on scouts reporting accurately. Kou Rui's improvement under Ming Yu lies in managing those uncertainties rather than pretending they do not exist. (Chapters 200–201 and 230)

Relationships

• Zhou Weiqing: Kou Rui chooses Zhou after seeing him defend commoners, then becomes his first academy assistant and intended reconnaissance leader. Zhou gives him equipment, education time, and a career path; Kou Rui supplies loyalty, intelligence, and later elite command.
• Ming Yu: Ming Yu is Kou Rui's professional mentor during the restoration. Kou Rui deliberately prioritizes learning military command and intelligence from him over individual tournament advancement, eventually earning Ming Yu's approval as a mature scout.
• Shangguan Bing'er: Kou Rui treats Bing'er as part of Zhou's inner circle, helps protect her at the academy, and coordinates with her during class duties. His teasing use of “sister-in-law” also reflects the class's informal closeness.
• Ma Qun: Ma Qun is Kou Rui's roommate and fellow early supporter of Zhou. Their contrasting size and temperament become a source of humor, while both help anchor Commoner Class One's loyalty.
