Shade

Shade is an ancient extra-dimensional being first encountered as the invigilator of the Order of the Reaper's legacy trials. One of the Reaper's many literal shadows, he later accepts a familiar bond with Jason Asano and becomes scout, transport network, adviser and moral counterweight. His long development turns on a choice between inherited cosmic obligation and the relationships formed through mortal service, culminating in his decision to walk beside Jason permanently rather than remain property, servant or distant observer. (Chapters 157, 174–176, 866)

Biography

Earth's hidden magical war

Jason's resurrection on Earth preserves Shade's spirit in his soul but leaves the familiar without a physical vessel, forcing a new summoning before Shade can act in the world. The separation demonstrates the distinction Shade carefully maintains: he is not the body granted by an essence ability, and service is renewed through his willingness to inhabit a new one. Once restored, he guides and protects Jason's family while letting Jason draw on a perspective formed across many worlds. (Chapters 259, 347–348)

As Jason becomes a public figure in Earth's magical crisis, Shade supports both practical operations and the restraint Jason often lacks. He scouts monster zones, carries people, stages transport and even participates in the carefully humanising media performance around Jason. Later, one of his bodies waits in Anna's shadow to guide her through the Asano domain. The work looks domestic beside cosmic service, but Shade treats protecting family, delivering messages and offering counsel as meaningful obligations rather than lesser uses of an ancient being. (Chapters 356, 447)

Yaresh and the messenger war

In Yaresh, Shade's distributed bodies become connective tissue for Team Biscuit. Jason leaves them at strategic points, uses them for rapid shadow jumps and relies on them to move information between dispersed groups. Shade's contribution is rarely one decisive blow; it is the reliable presence that lets rescuers, ritualists and commanders operate as parts of the same effort. His judgement also checks Jason personally, preserving an older perspective without trying to seize command from the people living through the crisis. (Chapters 583, 662)

During the final underground operation, Shade simultaneously links Farrah and Clive's natural-array formation, Jason's remote observations and the defenders around the citadel. He reports activation through bodies placed with separate teams and lets Jason observe an enemy through another. The role expresses his chosen model of influence: not ruler or weapon, but the quiet power behind coordinated action. By enabling others to make timely decisions, he protects Jason while respecting the agency of everyone involved. (Chapter 777)

Appearance and personality

Shade's familiar vessels are figures made from darkness, their edges indistinct even in direct light. His appearance changes with vessel and context: at iron rank he resembles an empty shadow cloak, while later bodies gain luminous eyes and white details suggestive of an impeccably dressed servant. He can dissolve into a person's shadow, emerge from it without warning or combine bodies into animal, vehicle and transport forms defined by Jason's Dark Rider ability. (Chapters 157, 185, 347, 777)

He is formal, patient, dryly humorous and almost impossible to fluster. Shade addresses Jason as “Mr Asano” and often answers absurdity with precise understatement, but his reserve is not emotional absence. He values consent in a familiar bond, protects Jason's family without condescension and repeatedly challenges Jason when sacrifice becomes self-destruction. Millennia of service give him authority; his defining growth is deciding that age and origin do not exempt him from changing through friendship. (Chapters 185, 348, 866)

Magic and abilities

Nature, bond and vessels

Shade is an astral entity whose true nature is one of The Reaper's shadows. The familiar ability creates ranked vessels for him rather than creating Shade himself. At iron rank he can occupy three bodies, each capable of hiding in another person's shadow. At least one body in Jason's shadow allows Jason to hear and see through the others, while bodies embedded with other people provide surveillance, communication and protection. If every body is destroyed, Shade's spirit returns to the astral and requires an expensive summoning to manifest again. (Chapters 174, 176, 185, 214)

Bronze rank expands Shade from three bodies to seven and gives them limited physical force while retaining intangibility. A destroyed body can be remade as long as one survives, but reconstruction takes time and almost all of Jason's mana, making it impractical during a fight. Shade also gains a dimensional storage space accessible through any body. Silver rank produces thirty-one bodies; by gold rank he can operate through more than two hundred, enabling a network whose reach is enormous but still dependent on the placement and survival of vessels. (Chapters 236, 347, 866)

Mana drain, scouting and remote senses

Shade's touch drains mana, and he can pass the stolen energy to anyone carrying one of his bodies in their shadow. This makes him especially effective against incorporeal enemies such as wisps, whose own mana-based nature leaves them vulnerable to being emptied. His bodies are exceptional scouts because they can hide in shadows, pass through dangerous areas and distribute Jason's senses. The limits are informational and positional: Jason's remote perception depends on maintaining a body in his own shadow, and enemies capable of detecting or destroying incorporeal entities can disrupt the network. (Chapters 185, 194, 347)

Movement network and power mediation

At silver rank, any Shade body can teleport to another within a range equivalent to a portal ability one rank below his vessel, initially about forty kilometres. Within the same range, a body can serve as the origin point for Jason's non-combat abilities. Jason can shadow-jump between placed Shades without creating a portal or triggering its cooldown, share full perception through them and manifest separate cloaks around multiple bodies. Combat abilities such as Hand of the Reaper do not pass through this mediation, additional passengers raise the mana cost and mass use can rapidly drain Jason's pool. (Chapter 348)

Forms, transport and structural limits

Through Jason's Dark Rider power, Shade can turn individual or merged bodies into mounts and vehicles. His forms include horses, motorcycles, buses, aircraft and specialised creatures, making him the team's most adaptable transport resource. The transformation power is Jason's, so its rank restrictions continue to apply even when Shade's own vessel is stronger. Flight and submarine forms require more bodies for weaker results, large aircraft can consume prohibitively expensive amounts of energy and he can mimic only permanent structural attacks such as claws or a battering ram—not projectile weapons, poison breath or other special attacks. (Chapters 194, 236, 319, 348)

Shadow of the Hegemon

When the Reaper orders him to abandon Jason's failing soul, Shade refuses. He spends authority accumulated over tens of thousands of years to sanction himself, changing Shadow of the Reaper into Shadow of the Hegemon, accepting avatar status and making the familiar contract permanent at Gold 0. The transformation severs the Reaper's command without denying Shade's origin. Its greatest effect is relational: Shade gives up the option of leaving in order to become Jason's chosen companion, guide and “power behind the throne,” accepting that loyalty freely chosen carries risks ancient detachment avoids. (Chapter 866)

Relationships

  • Jason Asano: Jason begins as Shade's latest summoner and becomes the companion for whom Shade makes a permanent, self-defining commitment. Shade protects him, enables his most complex movement and confronts him when power or sacrifice threatens his identity. Their mature bond is neither ownership nor obedience, but chosen partnership with room for disagreement. (Chapters 176, 348, 866)
  • The Reaper: The Reaper is Shade's progenitor, father and original source of service. Shade respects that origin but rejects the claim that it makes him property forever. Sanctioning himself is painful precisely because it is not repudiation without love; it is the decision that filial loyalty cannot require complicity in enslaving Jason's soul. (Chapters 174, 866)
  • Colin and Gordon: Jason's other familiars share Shade's place within his soul but have different temperaments and combat functions. Shade supplies speech, judgement and distributed utility, while Colin and Gordon embody blood and doom. Together they are treated as companions rather than disposable summons, a principle Shade ultimately chooses to make permanent. (Chapters 185, 347, 777)
  • Farrah Hurin and Humphrey Geller: Farrah relies on Shade as a trusted communications link during ritual work, while Humphrey incorporates his scouting and transport into team command. Their reliance gives Shade a role within Team Biscuit that is broader than serving Jason alone. (Chapters 662, 777)

By Chapter 987, Shade remains active as Jason's permanently bonded gold-rank avatar familiar. He transports family, relays strategic messages and advises an inexperienced astral king while retaining the perspective of an entity who has served many summoners. His current role is to help Jason wield influence without confusing guidance with rule—to stand beside the throne, powerful enough to matter and free enough to say no. (Chapters 866, 985)
