Colin

Colin is Jason Asano's blood-dwelling apocalypse familiar, a swarm of tooth-mawed leeches descended from the sanguine horror Jason helped destroy. Initially expressive only through appetite and movement, Colin grows into a distinct companion whose blunt humour, willingness to fight and increasingly independent choices earn him a place in Jason's family as well as his combat arsenal. Biography

Earth’s hidden magical war

Jason's return to Earth re-establishes Colin as more than a weapon carried in his blood. Dawn's painting names Jason, Colin, Gordon and Shade as four pillars, reflecting how thoroughly the familiar bond has become part of Jason's identity. Colin's motive remains elemental—feed, survive and protect Jason—but Jason's immediate recognition of him as a pillar turns that appetite into one part of a family bond rather than evidence that Colin is merely a controlled monster. Colin repeatedly makes Jason's dangerous methods possible by converting hunger into pressure at exactly the right moment. In a collapsing proto-space, his swarm piles onto an intelligent monster during an ambush, cutting it off from its abilities through panic while Jason completes the kill. Later, Jason deliberately leaks Colin's aura to frighten a vampire and reveals that the old vampires' remains have fed something even hungrier. Colin therefore becomes both tactical partner and warning: Jason protects people partly by carrying a predator more terrible than many of their enemies. (Chapters 360, 441)

Yaresh and the messenger war

By the Yaresh crisis, Colin's place within Team Biscuit rests on a crucial distinction between summoned and bonded familiars. His vessel can be destroyed and his spirit returned to the astral for resummoning, which lets Jason risk him in battles that would permanently kill a bonded creature such as Stash. That recovery is not consequence-free: a destroyed vessel still costs resources and time, and Jason's habit of retaining part of Colin inside himself shows that protecting the familiar matters independently of preserving a useful power. The world-taker worm outbreak gives Colin an ideal food source but also exposes a hard ceiling. He cannot reproduce without limit; at best he can double his normal mass, and only while actively feeding. The extraordinary meal nevertheless produces lasting development. After consuming the worm queen, Colin voluntarily undergoes a metamorphosis into a full Voice of the Will, overcoming limits in Jason's incomplete astral-king development and changing their bond from a familiar connection into a more profound, chosen extension of Jason's will. Appearance and personality

Colin's base form is a swarm of red, tooth-ringed leeches capable of binding itself into a rough humanoid with blood-soaked bandages. Later forms are more elaborate: an immense apocalypse beast made from flesh, mouths and tendrils, and eventually a perfect human copy of Jason whose crimson eyes distinguish him from the original. Even when humanoid, his body remains an arrangement of fluid biomass rather than an ordinary human anatomy. (Chapters 13, 748, 869)

His earliest personality is communicated through obedience, affection and indiscriminate hunger. Jason's insistence on giving him an ordinary name establishes an intimacy others find absurd, and Colin responds by trusting Jason enough to dissolve into his bloodstream. As his individuality develops, that silent appetite becomes irreverent speech. He teases Jason with nicknames, jokes about his own former gloop noises and treats Shade and Gordon as peers, retaining his appetite without being defined solely by it. (Chapters 30, 441, 869)

Magic and abilities

Swarm vessel and familiar bond

Colin originates in a sanguine horror whose body is a collective of leeches. The swarm can redistribute itself, tighten bloody bindings into a humanoid form and recover from extreme physical dispersal; the original horror could reconstitute from a single surviving leech. As Jason's familiar, Colin normally inhabits his bloodstream and can emerge through an opened wound. Keeping part of the swarm inside Jason prevents total vessel loss, while reserve biomass stored in Jason's soul realm can be returned when Colin has been badly depleted. (Chapters 13, 30, 748)

The swarm structure makes ordinary single-target force inefficient, but it does not make Colin invulnerable. Salt rapidly kills isolated leeches, seawater prevents his safe deployment and large area attacks can destroy biomass faster than feeding restores it. Even when fighting a gold-rank spider mole without suffering normal rank suppression, Colin's incomplete silver-rank apocalypse form is torn apart faster than it can regenerate. His survivability depends on dispersal, retained biomass, available prey and Jason's willingness to withdraw or replenish him. (Chapters 13, 197, 382, 748)

Feeding, afflictions and regeneration

Every leech bites, drains life force and delivers leech toxin, allowing a swarm deployment to spread many afflictions at once. At bronze rank, Jason's Leech Bite begins inflicting the same toxin; each instance refreshes bleeding when healing tries to remove it. This creates a close mechanical interaction between familiar and summoner: Colin supplies bulk application and life drain while Jason stacks, accelerates and converts the resulting afflictions into a killing sequence. A target buried under the swarm must fight both physical panic and a rapidly worsening affliction package. (Chapters 188, 236, 360)

Colin also supports Jason while subsumed. Jason keeps him inside during fights where regeneration matters more than swarm pressure, and Colin's stored biomass contributes to recovery and the blood robes that clothe Jason. Feeding can replace losses and briefly expand the swarm, but only to roughly twice its standard mass and only while food remains available. A large meal can leave Colin dormant afterward, so abundance does not translate into a permanent army of leeches. (Chapters 202, 652, 748)

Forms and combat applications

Colin's ordinary humanoid configuration keeps a mobile swarm coherent, but his later apocalypse-beast form trades compactness for reach and predation. It produces a huge toothed maw and rope-like tendrils tipped with smaller mouths, anchoring into large targets and draining them to repair damage. The form can pressure enemies above Colin's rank because the familiar inherits Jason's ability to bypass rank-based suppression, yet raw power still matters: a stronger monster can sever tendrils and halt the transformation by forcing every drop of stolen life into immediate repair. (Chapter 748)

At higher development Colin can take a perfect Jason-shaped body and speak normally. This is not evidence that his swarm nature has disappeared; it is a refined expression of the same mutable biomass and his maturation as a person. The human guise lets him interact with Jason's familiar family as an equal rather than remaining an animal-like presence, while his combat identity remains grounded in consuming, multiplying and overwhelming flesh through contact. (Chapters 750, 869)

Voice of the Will

Eating the world-taker worm queen gives Colin enough power to cross a threshold unavailable through Jason's incomplete astral-king state alone. The subsequent metamorphosis is voluntary and makes Colin a full Voice of the Will, unlike Gordon and Farrah's intermediate bonds. The change deepens Colin's structural connection to Jason without erasing agency: Jason explicitly refuses to pressure others into the same transition, and Colin's own increasingly articulate personality demonstrates that being a Voice is not the same as becoming a mindless extension. • Jason Asano: Jason turns a remnant apocalypse monster into “his little guy,” then consistently treats Colin as a companion whose survival and consent matter. Colin answers with fierce protection, bodily trust and eventually enough independence to mock Jason openly. Their bond evolves from familiar and summoner into family and, after the Voice metamorphosis, a voluntary metaphysical partnership. (Chapters 30, 748, 750, 869)
• Shade and Gordon: The other familiars are Colin's closest peers within Jason's soul. Their functions differ—Colin supplies flesh, hunger and regeneration while Shade supplies distributed utility and Gordon supplies ranged cosmic force—but all three become pillars of Jason's identity. Colin's later banter with them shows that the familiar trio has matured into a social family rather than a set of interchangeable powers. (Chapters 274, 869)
• Farrah Hurin: Farrah first helps destroy the sanguine horror from which Colin emerges and later fights beside the familiar as one of Jason's most trusted companions. Her early alarm at the monster contrasts with the mature team's acceptance that Colin's appetite can be directed without pretending it is harmless. (Chapters 13, 360)

By Chapter 987, Colin remains active in Jason's astral kingdom as a gold-rank familiar and full Voice of the Will. He still feeds and fights as an apocalypse swarm, but his current role also includes that of outspoken companion: a living part of Jason's power who can choose, joke, disagree and walk beside the other members of the family in a body of his own design.
