Biography
A catastrophic bargain and its aftermath
Chen is one of Earth’s scarce category-four essence users, dependent on reality-core power because the planet cannot naturally sustain him. Shako exploits that dependency and the Chinese Network’s rivalry with Jason, persuading Chen to carry a dimensional bomb into an astral space. Chen deploys it believing the explosion will remove Jason; instead it kills him temporarily, destabilises the region, and helps create a transformation zone with consequences far beyond Chen’s intended strike. (Chapters 406–432)
Chen withdraws rather than confront what he unleashed and lives for decades with Jason’s eventual response hanging over him. When they meet again, Jason explicitly releases the threat instead of perpetuating it, allowing Chen to participate in international planning without waiting for assassination. Chen remains a state operative, but his wary conduct and concern for his niece Li Mei show a man now aware that obedience and national advantage do not contain the cost of cosmic manipulation. Skills and abilities
Chen is a gold-rank essence user with the speed, strength, aura, and resilience of that rank. His strategic limit on early Earth is energy supply: without gold-rank resources he must return to stasis, making reality cores and those who control them sources of leverage. Shako defeats him politically rather than physically by exploiting that dependency and incomplete knowledge. (Chapters 406–432, 947–948)
