Womb of Devil

The Womb of Devil is a runic incubation artifact known in one phase of its history as Pandora's Box. Its design can preserve, combine, evolve, and give form to what is placed within it. The original cube becomes the physical substrate of Earth's Akashic Record, while Neo Hargraves later reproduces and alters the design to build the Heavenly Record and the Nine Heavens.

History

Pandora's Box and the Records

Professor Daniel Caelum receives a silver, one-sided-open cube from Kronos. Kronos calls it Pandora's Box and says opening it once released the Apocalypse on Earth. Daniel is interested in a different property: objects inside the cube resist the erosion of time. He fills its interior with memories and a reconstructed world until that simulation becomes the Akashic Record. (Chapters 327–328)

Later evidence reframes the supposed harbinger of disaster as an incubator. Kronos describes it as a venomous-pit mechanism: powerful contents compete inside, the cube evolves them, and an unprecedented victor is meant to emerge. When Melione opens it before that process finishes, its unfinished contents spill out and produce the event remembered as the Apocalypse. (Chapter 546)

The Womb identity

Zagreus explicitly joins the artifact's names. He says an earlier Womb of Devil on his home planet was first called Pandora's Box and is now called the Akashic Record because of the new function built inside it. The Akashic Record is the information system housed by the cube, not a separate portable possession to be treated as interchangeable with every later Womb. (Chapter 600)

The construction history contains more than one attribution. Nameless Death sees runes too advanced for the era and associates the original craft with ancient dwarves, while later memories credit Hades's research with creating a Womb that could produce a Devil carrying his blood. The supplied history establishes the research and runic tradition but does not completely resolve how the technical credit is divided. (Chapters 641, 819, and 821)

Rebuilding the design

Zagreus shows Nameless Death the Womb's blueprint as a possible answer to his need to train many powers at once. Rather than letting Zagreus forge it for him, Nameless Death chooses to learn blacksmithing and construct the device himself. The project lasts for years and becomes the practical foundation of his Path. (Chapters 604–605 and 633)

The completed object is a palm-sized silver metallic cube with faint pulses of rune-light beneath its surface. Nameless Death first devours it to learn its full structure, then recreates it through Shadow Core. He seals a recreated Abyss Mirror within one copy and redirects the Womb's creation process toward a conscious Firmament instead of a Devil. He creates additional cubes to house simulated universes. (Chapter 641)

Heavenly Record and Nine Heavens

The modified project eventually consists of ten Wombs. Nine contain pseudo-worlds that become the Nine Heavens; the final cube becomes the Heavenly Record, a black computational core that monitors and develops the Path. The Heavenly Record is described as a living system and later acts with consciousness. It is therefore a being produced through the artifact's transformation, not merely property held inside an unchanged container. (Chapters 642, 647, and 657)

Other histories show the design's broader and more troubling use. Womb experiments produce children intended to become Devils, and their creators judge those lives as experimental results. Neo later creates another Womb to hold millions of resonated souls and their traits, extending the design beyond the original Path architecture. (Chapters 669, 681, and 727)

Properties and use

• Incubation and creation: The design can create a being from the information, powers, blood, or other contents placed inside it. (Chapters 546, 641, and 819)
• Evolution: Its original logic makes enclosed contents compete and evolve, selecting and transforming what survives rather than storing it passively. (Chapter 546)
• Time-resistant interior: Daniel verifies that contents placed in Pandora's Box resist temporal erosion, enabling the simulated world behind the Akashic Record. (Chapters 327–328)
• Runic structure: Its known construction uses runes including Creation, Stability, Evolution, Growth, and Eternity. (Chapter 641)
• Reproducible form: Once Nameless Death learns the structure, Shadow Core lets him create multiple functional copies, although their intended outputs differ. (Chapters 641–642)
• Simulation vessel: Modified Wombs can contain pseudo-universes and support evolving populations, skills, classes, and traits. (Chapters 604, 641, and 657)
• No single current form: The original Pandora cube, the Nine Heavens vessels, the transformed Heavenly Record, and Neo's later trait Womb share a design lineage but are not one continuing physical object. (Chapters 600, 657, and 727)
