Zagreus

Zagreus Hargraves is the First Prince of the Underworld, the son of Persephone Hargraves, and Neo Hargraves's brother through her. He enters the Voraka Site to recover the broken portion of Persephone's soul and win a Shadow Trial reward that can protect the Hargraves line from its lethal first skill. His reluctant alliance with the amnesiac Nameless Death becomes the relationship through which he recognizes Neo again.

Zagreus has died and reincarnated across earlier lives, but those lives belong to one continuous person. Nameless Death is not one of those incarnations: he is Neo, traveling through a paradox-sensitive history. Zagreus infers that identity from family bonds and Bael's refusal to attack, yet Neo cannot confirm it before Zagreus leaves Voraka without changing the future they are trying to preserve. (Chapters 625, 647, and 662–664)

Biography

A reluctant alliance in the Voraka Site

Zagreus enters the Voraka Site's red jungle pursuing the Berserker, whose manifestation offers a chance to locate Persephone's missing soul. He reaches the battle just as Berserker is about to destroy Nameless Death's consciousness. A shot from Zagreus kills the manifestation and saves the stranger, even though Zagreus needed the enemy alive for interrogation. His companion notes the contradiction: Zagreus shows no mercy to enemies but sacrifices tactical advantage to protect a bystander. (Chapters 595 and 598)

He converts that intervention into a partnership. Nameless Death has a century before Berserker returns and a damaged consciousness that Zagreus offers to repair. Their travel to the Mountain takes years, during which Zagreus's profanity, mockery, and deliberate provocations become familiar rather than merely hostile. Beneath those habits he studies Nameless Death's regeneration, altered Cores, and moral limits, suspecting that the man resembles someone he has lost without yet accepting that the resemblance is Neo. (Chapter 598)

Zagreus's strength during the Trial comes partly from Ekravion, an eldritch companion able to consume a person's future development and lend that power to the present. The method suits Zagreus's refusal to treat honorable combat as more important than victory, but the cost is real: borrowed development cannot be regained until the equivalent training has been completed, and exhausting too much future would permanently obstruct growth. He therefore wants Nameless Death's help rather than bulldozing through the Site alone. (Chapters 598 and 604–605)

That need does not stop Zagreus from helping his partner grow. He realizes Nameless Death can strengthen abilities by devouring attackers, publicizes the Heavenbreaker in a way calculated to attract greedy monsters without technically hiring them, and designs a Womb of Devil that can train excess techniques inside simulated life. He summons Barbatos and Asmodea when outside strength becomes necessary, accepting the institutional help he first resisted. (Chapters 604–608)

The Life Flame, Sacred Gate, and betrayal

The alliance's emotional center is the Life Flame, Zagreus's name for the fragment of Persephone's soul kept at the Mountain. Berserker and Karax steal it, provoking Zagreus to demand enough borrowed power to destroy the Site. Barbatos persuades him to think first. Zagreus recognizes that Berserker, Persephone's brother, is unlikely to harm her and is instead using the fragment as bait, so he begins a slower search rather than risking his mother's soul in indiscriminate retaliation. (Chapters 612 and 625)

At the Site's center, the party finds a white hole and a trial administered by a manifestation of Shadow Supreme. Nameless Death alone can enter the Sacred Gate. He returns with knowledge that saving Voraka by the expected route will let the Eternals erase the wider universe, a conflict he cannot fully explain without exposing his identity and future. Zagreus sees only a companion returning changed and increasingly unwilling to help finish the Shadow Trial. (Chapters 613 and 624–628)

Before the alliance breaks, Zagreus explains the wish that brought him there. The Hargraves bloodline's first skill is Death, trained by killing oneself; without outside intervention, its use ends the life meant to master it. Zagreus intends to ask for a ritual through which descendants can contract Underworld Grim Reapers and resurrect. Nameless Death realizes that the resurrection already known in his own history exists because Zagreus eventually succeeds, making the prince's private mission part of his family's causal foundation. (Chapter 625)

Nameless Death nevertheless asks Zagreus to release Berserker and stop the Trial's apparent resolution. For Zagreus, the request feels like betrayal precisely because he has begun to believe this man may be his brother. Nameless Death uses Truth to silence Zagreus, Asmodea, and Leonora and escapes with Berserker. Zagreus forces himself upright through dormant draconic blood, then directs Barbatos to search every Space-Time Prison, moving from hurt uncertainty to a decision that the conflict must be settled by power. (Chapters 628 and 631)

Dragon awakening, recognition, and the resurrection wish

Asmodea explains why the Underworld has hidden Zagreus's Ancient Dragon inheritance. His father's ancient enemies can track an awakened bloodline and will risk the Deathbounds' retaliation to attack the Monarch's son. Zagreus has repeatedly died and reincarnated before reaching this threshold; in the current life he has awakened his Trait, but the older draconic power remains dormant. He hears Asmodea's warning and asks for time rather than dismissing the danger, even while searching for a controlled solution. (Chapters 631–632)

The solution is a temporary independent space reinforced by Truth. Within it, Zagreus awakens without broadcasting his presence across the Cosmos. Violet fire changes his body, curved horns and black wings emerge, and Dragon Speech makes the environment obey commands such as “fall” and “regress.” He attacks Berserker for the Life Flame and later joins Barbatos in trying to prevent Nameless Death's enlightenment, but the bloodline remains unstable because Time is already pushing it back toward dormancy. (Chapters 653–656)

Neo's completed Path overwhelms the battlefield. Zagreus prepares an attack, then stops after Bael refuses to strike Nameless Death. He knows there are only two people Bael would never attack—Hades and Neo—and his suspicion becomes recognition. The killing intent disappears; Zagreus asks his brother to stop pretending. Neo still denies the name because confirmation would create a paradox, but he revives Voraka with a World Seed and thereby completes Zagreus's Trial before sending the prince through the reward portal. (Chapters 661–663)

At the reward space, Zagreus wants confirmation and wants to return to help Neo, yet he chooses the purpose with which he began. Shadow Supreme cannot remove the cursed Death skill, so Zagreus asks instead for a resurrection method that every Hargraves descendant will encounter before using it. The request is accepted through contracts with recognized Underworlds. His choice protects Neo and their wider lineage even though Zagreus experiences leaving his brother behind as another failure. (Chapter 664)

Completion ends Ekravion's one-time contract. The borrowed echo of Stage 5 leaves Zagreus, his temporarily awakened dragon blood remains suppressed, and he returns to his pre-Trial limits. Ekravion suggests that prolonged exposure may someday let Zagreus build a Void Divinity, but that is advice for possible future development rather than a rank attained in the novel. Zagreus gains the resurrection safeguard he sought while losing the borrowed power and companion that carried him through the Trial. (Chapter 664)

Appearance and personality

Zagreus first appears as a human man in a fitted black suit, with blond hair and red eyes, accompanied by a floating eldritch octopus. His temporary Ancient Dragon awakening lengthens his hair, produces curved horns and black wings, and surrounds him with violent violet flame. The transformation disappears after the Trial rather than becoming a permanent new body. (Chapters 595 and 654–655)

He curses freely, irritates people with surgical precision, and treats tactics others call cheating as proof of practical intelligence. The abrasive manner hides a strong boundary: enemies receive little mercy, but bystanders are worth protecting even at personal cost. Zagreus is intensely loyal to family, especially Persephone and Neo, and his greatest fear is not losing status but failing to preserve the people whose survival gives the Trial meaning. (Chapters 598, 604–605, 625, and 662–664)

Powers and limitations

Borrowed future strength

Ekravion can eat Zagreus's future development and lend the resulting power to his present body. This gives Zagreus flexible, potentially enormous temporary strength across his Trial, including an explicitly referenced Stage 5 echo at its end. The exchange is not free advancement. Every borrowed interval delays natural growth by the same development, indiscriminate use could cripple his future, and the entire loan vanishes when the one-time contract concludes. (Chapters 604–605 and 664)

Ancient Dragon blood and Dragon Speech

Zagreus inherits Ancient Dragon blood from his father. A controlled temporary awakening grants violet flame, horns, wings, tremendous physical power, and Dragon Speech that commands phenomena rather than merely persuading them. He can change gravity, force regression, strengthen allies, and prevent movement. Speech is also a limitation: Nameless Death's Silence stops several commands, and the awakening itself risks alerting ancient dragons whose hatred makes permanent use catastrophically dangerous. (Chapters 631–632 and 654–656)

Reincarnation and Hargraves bloodline

Zagreus has repeatedly died and reincarnated and describes the apparent number of future lives as effectively endless until the universe itself ends. In his current life, his talent lets him master the bloodline's Death skill after one death and return through Immortal. The process does not make death consequence-free. Earlier incarnations failed to reach a dragon awakening, and the lethal structure of Death is serious enough that his Shadow Trial reward is devoted to a universal resurrection workaround. (Chapters 604, 625, 631, and 664)

Strategy, weapons, and Underworld authority

Zagreus fights with a gun, sword, created weapons, flame, and mental attacks capable of bypassing the normal durability of Gods. He is also a planner who analyzes Nameless Death's Cores, builds ambush networks, and coordinates Grim Reapers. His title as First Prince lets him summon Underworld servants and command formal respect, but it is not a numbered existence rank. His dependency on borrowed power is known and exploitable, as Silence can prevent him from asking Ekravion for more. (Chapters 598, 604–606, 625, 628, and 655–656)

Neo Hargraves

Zagreus protects Nameless Death before recognizing him, trains beside him for decades, and feels a brotherly familiarity that evidence gradually confirms. Their goals then conflict because Neo must protect the universe without revealing a paradox-sensitive identity. Recognition comes through Bael's loyalty rather than a spoken confession. Zagreus's final reward places family above immediate certainty: the resurrection method protects Neo even as Zagreus is forced to leave him behind. (Chapters 598–664)

Persephone Hargraves

Persephone is Zagreus's mother and the source of the Trial's most personal objective. Her broken soul, the Life Flame, is stolen and used to draw him into conflict. Zagreus nearly demands destructive Stage 6 power in response but accepts that Berserker is unlikely to harm his sister. His search for Persephone and wish to protect every descendant show the same loyalty at different scales: one lost parent leads him to safeguard an entire bloodline. (Chapters 603, 612, 625, and 649–654)

The Berserker

The Berserker hates Zagreus's Hargraves blood and reliance on borrowed strength, while Zagreus treats him as both enemy and key to Persephone's location. Their clashes become a proxy for opposing values—combat earned through adaptation against victory secured through planning and loans. Family complicates the hatred because Persephone is Berserker's sister, giving Zagreus reason to believe the Life Flame is leverage rather than a target for destruction. (Chapters 595–598, 612, 625, and 653–656)

Barbatos, Asmodea, and the Underworld

Barbatos and Asmodea address Zagreus as prince, answer his summons, and protect him while sometimes withholding dangerous knowledge. Barbatos restrains his rage over the Life Flame and helps construct the temporary awakening plan; Asmodea explains why permanent dragon awakening would expose him. Their service is therefore not simple obedience. They repeatedly supply judgment and institutional memory that keep the First Prince from turning family devotion into an irreversible disaster. Ekravion

Ekravion is the octopus-like demon contracted to Zagreus for the duration of the Shadow Trial. He lends power from Zagreus's future, contributes technical knowledge, challenges the prince's refusal to ask Grim Reapers for help, and warns against overborrowing. Their contract can be made only once. At its end, Ekravion offers a final suggestion about Void Divinity and departs, leaving Zagreus with neither the borrowed strength nor an immediate replacement for their long partnership.
