Grim Reaper Badge

A Grim Reaper Badge identifies a member of the Underworld's limited Grim Reaper order and provides functions tied to that office. Neo Hargraves's badge is the principal example: it opens routes between the living world and the Underworld, provides institutional recognition, and continues to matter after history changes the circumstances under which he became a Grim Reaper.

History

Thanatos's badge

During the past reached through the Shadow Trial, Neo becomes a Grim Reaper under the name Thanatos. His badge is black, bears a scythe emblem on its front, and carries that alias on its reverse in an ancient language. He explains that every Grim Reaper receives such a badge and that it permits travel between the living world and Underworld when the journey has a valid purpose. When access to the Underworld is abruptly cut off, the badge stops responding along with the other routes available to the dead and the Grim Reapers. (Chapters 278–279)

A credential that outlives its timeline

After the timeline changes, Neo is no longer supposed to have become a Grim Reaper in the same way. He nevertheless retains the badge and tests whether it still has authority. It opens an Underworld portal, and Gremory explains that Andromalius gave up a Grim Reaper position after learning that another timeline had made Neo his successor. The badge therefore remains a working credential rather than an inert remnant of erased history. (Chapters 353, 355–356)

Neo uses that standing to travel through different Underworld Houses and to identify himself to their institutions. The badge also carries communications, allowing him to speak through it rather than using it only as a physical key. (Chapters 360, 366, and 392)

Failure, return, and later identity

Its access is not absolute. The badge cannot open a portal when Neo tries to call on the Underworld from Tartarus, and another attempt fails while Tartarus is being destroyed. These failures show that possessing a valid badge does not override worlds or conditions that block the Underworld route. (Chapters 406 and 533)

In later arcs the badge again serves as Neo's regular means of passage. He keeps it on his person, uses it to return to the Underworld, and presents it to prove his identity after his soul and appearance change. At that point its number is shown as eighty-first, rather than the earlier discussion of the seventy-third position; the source does not fully reconcile whether the object, office, or timeline assignment has been revised. Properties and use

• Office credential: The badge records its bearer as a Grim Reaper and is accepted by Underworld staff and guardians as proof of that authority. (Chapters 279, 356, and 708)
• Underworld passage: A bearer can activate the badge to open a portal between the surface and Underworld, subject to the order's valid-purpose rule and the route being available. (Chapters 279, 355, and 714)
• House access: Neo can use a different Underworld House's connection rather than relying on only one fixed gate. (Chapter 360)
• Communication: The badge can carry speech as a remote communication tool. (Chapter 392)
• Environmental limits: It fails when the surrounding world or crisis prevents a connection to the Underworld; holding the credential does not force a route open. (Chapters 406 and 533)
• Timeline-sensitive record: Names and position numbers attached to Neo's badge differ across its history. The badge's continuing authority is explicit, but the exact administrative reconciliation remains unresolved. (Chapters 279, 356, and 708)
