Mars Everhart
Mars Everhart is a Fire-element demigod and one of Neo Hargraves's earliest academy rivals. A weak heart and the Wandering God Surtr sealed inside him prevent ordinary advancement, so Mars builds his strength through extreme spell mastery and martial arts. He develops from a proud student desperate to outrun his body's limit into a disciplined protector whose talent carries martial techniques beyond the known Legendary rank. (Chapters 57, 95, 127, 543–544, 568, and 824–828)
Biography
Team Umbra and a life measured against limits
Mars joins Neo's mission team because he wants a rival, not an easy route through school. His constant grin, eagerness to race separate missions, and readiness to attack difficult targets make competition his preferred form of friendship. He also accepts Neo's leadership when the work becomes dangerous. During the Calamity Window mission he protects the teammates assigned to the shallower level and obeys the retreat plan despite wanting to rescue Neo, earning praise for calm judgment rather than raw output alone. (Chapters 57, 77, 80, 86, 101, 117, and 127)
That self-control is learned against a private deadline. Mars's heart cannot circulate enough Divine Energy for stronger spells, leaving him dependent on Fire Punch, a Whisper-rank spell he drives to Supreme mastery within weeks. He asks the Sphinx how to surpass Supreme because he knows ordinary classmates will eventually pass him, yet refuses to treat the condition as permission to stop. Neo recognizes that willingness to “burn his life” for improvement as the example behind his own relentless drive. (Chapters 85 and 95)
Sacrifice, weapons, and the sealed god
One projected academy future ends with Mars staying behind against the Minotaur so his friends can escape. Jack returns broken by the death of a companion he had already surpassed but still could not save. In the altered history Mars survives and tries to secure a God Slayer weapon, only for the bonding attempt to leave him emaciated and maim his hand. He hides despair behind reassurance and still contests the clan's attempt to reclaim the failed weapon, showing that helplessness frightens him more than pain. (Chapters 158, 188, 193, and 199)
The cause of his condition is Project Godseed. The Ares Clan sealed the Stage 2 Wandering God Surtr inside Mars as a child so proximity to a God's fire would accelerate elemental understanding. Instead, Surtr's flames strain Mars's body, cap his spell development, and crowd his mind so severely that forming even one Concept is extraordinary. A failed unsealing lets Surtr possess him and slaughter his friends in a possible future. Neo later removes Surtr safely, creates him a separate body, and binds him to protect and teach Mars without manipulating him. (Chapters 389–391 and 542–544)
Graduation, rule, and a chosen road
Freed from the seal's pressure, Mars graduates first in his class, narrowly ahead of Arthur and Jack. He trains with his father and becomes one of the demigods credited with saving their continents in the altered war history. At some point he also accepts a throne, but the office conflicts with the person he has always been. Once the Universal Alliance crisis settles, he steps down, leaves without announcing a destination, and chooses training and combat over political rule. (Chapters 568, 570–571, and 718)
His absence is therefore not withdrawal from responsibility. In the True Blessed Lands he de-escalates a meeting with Elizabeth, identifies why Zeus's God powers cannot function normally there, and tries to prevent a pointless fight. He later trusts Neo to handle Apollyon and takes responsibility for intercepting cultivators approaching from another route. Mars still wants worthy opposition, but his rivalry has become a way of preparing to protect others rather than proving that he deserves a place beside them. (Chapters 798 and 827–828)
Extreme Heavens beyond Legendary rank
The Martial King selects Mars and Zeus as the outsiders most capable of learning the Righteous Martial Alliance's secrets. Daily defeats reveal complementary gifts: Zeus copies and adapts, while Mars pushes a technique's attainable force beyond accepted limits. Mars endures the training with the same enthusiasm that once carried him through an underwater Fire mission, and the Martial King classifies his natural route as Martial Artist (Extreme Heavens). (Chapters 86 and 824–825)
Mars begins developing Martial Arts beyond Legendary rank and uses them against more than a hundred cultivators below Fourth Step. His Technique Spirits expose enemies concealed in folded space, reinforce simple strikes, and let him defeat Third Step cultivators faster than they can coordinate. He understands the boundary of that achievement and does not claim he can defeat a true Fourth Step. When the path of progress is later sealed, his conflict with Zeus stops as both confront a limit that individual rivalry cannot solve. (Chapters 825 and 827–831)
Appearance and personality
Mars is characterized most consistently by long, flame-red hair in later visions and by the fire that surrounds his close-quarters attacks. He is physically expressive: he grins at challenges, closes distance with his fists, and makes even a serious duel feel like an invitation to compete. His early illness can leave him exhausted after prolonged output, while the failed Soul Weapon bond briefly reduces him to an extremely thin, injured state. (Chapters 57, 85, 199, 347, and 389)
He is proud without being incapable of discipline. Mars openly wants to beat Neo, argues for his leadership because he trusts it, and follows orders that deny him the fight he wants. Jokes and a habitual smile help him keep fear private, but he is not careless about other people's autonomy: after learning what was done to him, his release is conditioned on his own permission, and later he prefers de-escalation when a battle has no purpose. His strongest continuity is refusal to let weakness decide his identity. (Chapters 80, 95, 101, 127, 199, 544, and 798)
Powers and limitations
Fire Punch, spell mastery, and Concept
Mars begins with Fire Punch, a Whisper-rank spell whose low energy demand suits his damaged heart. He reaches Supreme mastery unusually quickly and applies fire through punches, grappling feints, ground eruptions, and paired flame dragons. Supreme mastery maximizes what the spell can offer but does not promote it to a higher spell rank, which is why Mars searches for a method beyond Supreme rather than claiming an ordinary rank breakthrough. (Chapters 85, 95, 129, and 347)
Despite Surtr's interference, Mars forms a Fire Concept. The Godseed experiment prevents him from focusing on his own elementals and leaves his body unable to exert the Concept's full force. Removing Surtr cures the source of that ceiling, but the narrative does not provide a numbered God stage or a complete elemental-mastery chronology for Mars afterward. (Chapters 389 and 543–544)
Martial arts and Technique Spirits
Mars prefers unarmed martial arts to weapons. His style combines physical strikes with flame, rapid changes of angle, deceptive grapples, and coordinated pressure. In the True Blessed Lands he cultivates Technique Spirits, manifestations inseparable from the martial arts that create them. Rank belongs to each technique—Common, Rare, Exquisite, Legendary, and an unnamed level beyond Legendary—rather than to Mars as an elemental God. (Chapters 193, 347, and 824–825)
His Extreme Heavens talent pushes techniques to power their conventional design should not support. By the cultivator ambush he has begun progressing beyond Legendary rank, can strike enemies hiding within distorted space, and overwhelms groups of Third Step opponents. He remains below the demonstrated Fourth-Step threat line and waits for openings rather than confusing exceptional technique with invulnerability. (Chapters 825 and 827–828)
Godseed limits and Surtr
Surtr's Stage 2 presence exposes Mars constantly to divine flames and a foreign Concept. That proximity helps explain his exceptional early insight, but the physical cost is a weak heart, arrested growth beyond Awakened rank, and an inability to advance his Fire spell beyond Expert in the ordinary progression described by Project Godseed. Breaking the seal incorrectly risks Surtr taking control of his body. (Chapters 389 and 543)
Neo's extraction gives Surtr a separate peak-Stage-2 body and establishes a coercive safeguard against the God, but Mars's consent remains a stated condition of any teaching or deeper use of his former captor. Freedom removes an imposed obstruction; it does not retroactively grant Mars Surtr's God stage or make the two characters one identity. (Chapters 543–544)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fire Punch — Whisper rank, Supreme mastery | By 95 | Mars explicitly identifies his only usable spell and its mastery; Supreme is mastery, not spell rank. |
| Awakened demigod | By 127 | Project Godseed damage prevents normal advancement beyond Awakened rank; no Grade is supplied. |
| Fire Concept formed | By 543 | Neo's examination confirms the Concept despite Surtr's interference; no mastery subrank is given. |
| Surtr extracted; imposed ceiling removed | 543–544 | Neo separates the Stage 2 God from Mars. Surtr's rank is not inherited by Mars. |
| Extreme Heavens | 824–825 | The Martial King identifies Mars's martial archetype and begins advanced training. |
| Technique quality beyond Legendary | 827–828 | Mars crosses the known Legendary quality threshold but remains unable to face a genuine Fourth Step head-on. |
Relationships
Neo Hargraves
Mars chooses Neo as a rival and leader, while Neo treats Mars's refusal to surrender to illness as an ideal worth imitating. Neo later uncovers Project Godseed and frees Surtr with safeguards centered on Mars's consent. Their final trust lets Mars defend an approach to Neo without doubting that Neo can handle his own battle. (Chapters 80, 95, 101, 543–544, and 827)
Arthur and Felix
Arthur and Felix are Mars's academy peers, competitors, and companions through multiple altered histories. They witness his failed weapon bond, help plan around his sealed God, and graduate beside him. Felix eventually challenges him for first rank, turning competition into evidence that their whole group has grown. (Chapters 174, 199, 216, 391, and 568)
Jack Hanma and Zeus
Jack Hanma carries the grief of Mars's sacrificial death in one timeline and responsibility for a safe unsealing in another. Zeus becomes Mars's partner and rival under the Martial King; their gifts differ, but training and the cultivator crisis require them to coordinate rather than decide a simple winner. (Chapters 158, 391, and 824–831)
Items
Mars briefly attempts to bond with a God Slayer bullet, but the process fails and the Ares Clan asserts ownership. The weapon is neither his lasting Soul Weapon nor a listed notable item under the wiki's finalized item scope. (Chapters 193 and 199)
