Caeden

Caeden is Caeli's brother and a Stygian Cult infiltrator who joins Keandra's adventuring team. His staged disappearance draws the group deeper into the Limgrell investigation and culminates in a prepared trap, but his attachment to Keandra later places him in conflict with Caeli and the other cultists. (Chapters 275–316)

Biography

The Tower to Picking up the Pieces

Caeden is absent when Kai first meets the team, but his supposed disappearance shapes every decision around Limgrell. His companions remember a capable, modest problem-solver who helped them survive lean contracts, and Caeli says he enabled her to escape their family. Keandra, who had been drawn to his effortless confidence despite wanting to best him, refuses to abandon the search. That reputation is later reinterpreted as part of a longer infiltration: Caeden and Caeli joined the team while Keandra was estranged from Kai, and Caeden then staged his own kidnapping to supply a credible reason for the adventurers to remain in town. (Chapters 275–296 and 316)

The team finds Caeden apparently bound in the cult's underground base. He greets Keandra with a tired smile, draws her close, checks whether another expected captive is present, and waits while Caeli triggers the runic trap under the room. When the prisoners later confront the siblings, Caeden removes his mask and tries to persuade Keandra to surrender. He apologizes and promises to protect her but refuses to clear the passage or extend that protection to everyone, arguing that the injured escapees cannot beat the cult's armed force. His appeal fails because he prioritizes preserving Keandra inside the cult's victory rather than rejecting the operation that endangered her companions. (Chapters 298–313)

Caeden initially watches the ensuing battle and then pleads with Caeli to stop pursuing Keandra after the cult loses a caster. Caeli refuses and is killed by Niel. Faced with his sister's body, Caeden draws his longsword, but instead of attacking Keandra he kills two surviving cultists in rapid succession and points the escapees toward the surface. He admits that he still belongs to the cult as a family tradition and gives no ideological explanation beyond acting because he wants to. Keandra leaves him in the cavern; his final destination, punishment, and allegiance after that choice are not shown. (Chapters 313–316)

Appearance and personality

Caeden is a handsome teenage boy with short dark hair, blue eyes, a small dimple when he smiles, and enough facial hair to develop messy stubble during his staged captivity. His resemblance to Caeli identifies them as siblings. Teammates remember him as self-assured, humble, kind, calm under pressure, and unusually good at finding solutions. The reveal complicates but does not entirely erase that picture: he is a patient deceiver willing to deliver friends to the cult, yet he shows remorse, tries repeatedly to spare Keandra, opposes Caeli's revenge, and finally kills fellow cultists to let the prisoners go. The corpus never resolves how much of his earlier warmth was genuine or why family loyalty kept him in the cult. (Chapters 286, 289, 298, and 313–314)

Swordsmanship and grade

Caeden uses a longsword and has never lost a spar against Keandra. During the escape he decapitates two cult fighters before either can respond, moving almost too quickly for Keandra to follow. His blade produces a dark gleam that appears to extend the cutting arc, but the source gives no technique name, element, activation requirement, cost, or range. Keandra observes that he has advanced his grade since they last met, and Caeden distinguishes the escapees' lack of a fit Yellow fighter; however, the scene never prints Caeden's status or explicitly names his resulting grade. His exact race stage, profession, attributes, skills, and spell affinities therefore remain unconfirmed. (Chapters 313–314)

Infiltration and team judgment

Caeden maintains a false friendship for months, helps the team complete contracts, teaches Keandra to keep a cool head, and establishes himself as the person others expect to solve a crisis. He then disappears without witnesses and convincingly plays a bound prisoner long enough to place Keandra inside the prepared array. No deception, leadership, tracking, or escape skill is named, and the runic trap is a cult installation rather than a demonstrated personal spell. His later tactical judgment is accurate about the prisoners' poor odds, but its limit is moral and relational: he treats surrender to the cult as the only rational path until Caeli's death forces him to choose direct betrayal of his own allies. • Caeli: Caeli is Caeden's sister and partner in the infiltration. He once helped her escape their family, but their priorities divide in the cavern: Caeden tries to limit deaths and protect Keandra, while Caeli blames his attachment for the failed operation. After Niel kills her, Caeden turns his sword on two fellow cultists rather than avenge her against Keandra. (Chapters 286, 289, 298, and 313–314)
• Keandra Tylenn: Caeden becomes Keandra's teammate and an unacknowledged romantic interest while concealing his cult allegiance. He stages his abduction and helps trap her, then offers selective protection if she surrenders. His final act saves her from two cultists but does not repair the betrayal, and she leaves without resolving their relationship. (Chapters 283–289, 298, and 313–316)
• Niel: Niel remembers Caeden as a capable, humble teammate and misses him after the disappearance. When rescued from experimentation, he identifies both siblings as traitors; he later kills Caeli while Caeden remains outside the fight. (Chapters 286, 306, and 314)
