Niel

Niel is an adventurer from the Baquaire Archipelago and a longstanding member of Keandra Tylenn's team. He organizes the group's front line, helps investigate Limgrell's disappearances, and remains loyal after the case turns dangerous. Abducted and experimented on by the Stygian Cult, he dies saving Keandra during the prisoners' escape. (Chapters 275–317)

Biography

The Tower to Wayward Butler

Niel meets Kai Tylenn after Kai appears inside an ancient tower surrounded by cloud fairies. He tempers Caeli's suspicion, introduces the trapped adventurers, and helps turn Kai's proposed escape into a team plan. Niel leads with sword and shield, maintains formation, and places himself between Kai and a Yellow-grade fairy despite being slower than the creature. His ice-coated shield absorbs repeated attacks until Caeli and Kai create an opening. After the group reunites with Keandra, his relief and friendly welcome establish him as a mediator who treats bringing everyone home as more important than proving himself. (Chapters 275–277)

In Limgrell, Niel helps investigate the missing people, visits victims' families, and tries to keep the increasingly strained team together. He secretly contacts Valela Hightide, not for payment, but because she had helped him in Higharbor and he wanted a trustworthy person to know what the islanders were doing. When communication becomes impossible, he blames himself for accepting the unusually lucrative contract and trapping his friends in the town. While walking with Kai through the fog, cultists suppress their skills and attack despite the pair traveling together; Niel's footprints end in the street, marking his abduction and leaving the others to search for him for more than a month. (Chapters 283–290)

Kai and Keandra eventually find Niel chained to an altar in the cult's underground base. His skull has been roughly shaved, his body bears older scars and freshly carved black runes, and his mana channels are tangled with murky essence after repeated experiments. Once freed and treated with potions and bandages, Niel can barely stand, yet his first clear warning is that Caeli and Caeden betrayed the team. He then asks his rescuers to help two prisoners who endured the same procedures and explains, with their prior agreement, that continued captivity would be worse than death. His concern for other victims persists even when every movement reopens his own wounds. (Chapters 303–307)

During the flight through the caverns, Niel repeatedly needs support, passes out, and reaches the last battle pale and armed only with a knife. He nevertheless joins the resistance and, when Caeli advances on Keandra, tackles his former teammate before she can deliver the killing blow. Niel stabs Caeli through the heart but is pierced below the sternum by her rapier; already weakened by imprisonment and blood loss, he dies telling Keandra to run. His death shapes the survivors well beyond Limgrell: Valela resolves to support his family, while Kai's memory of losing him contributes to his determination to become better prepared and never be hunted so helplessly again. (Chapters 307–317 and 346–347)

Appearance and personality

Niel is a young islander first distinguished by wavy brown curls. He later appears unshaven, tall, and broad-shouldered, usually carrying a sword and reinforced shield. The cult roughly shaves his head, leaves blood crusted over his gaunt face, and carves black runes and repeated scars across his torso; after rescue he remains pale, feverish, bandaged, and visibly thinner. The local narrative intermittently spells his name Neil without establishing it as a separate in-story name. Niel is friendly, cautious, cooperative, and protective, with a habit of mediating Caeli and Keandra's arguments. He also assumes more blame than is warranted, especially for accepting the Limgrell contract. Even after torture, he worries about fellow prisoners, and his final decision to shield Keandra completes the self-sacrificing pattern other characters repeatedly recognize in him. (Chapters 275–277, 283–290, and 304–314)

Skills, magic, and the Guide

Race and profession

Kai identifies Niel, Caeli, and Mari as peak-Orange humans whose professions are in the mid-to-high levels at the tower. Niel's exact profession name, level, specializations, and complete skill list are never supplied. Nothing in the corpus confirms that he advances to a new race grade, profession stage, or formal ability before his death. The cult's experiments cause a persistent physical and mana injury, but the chapters do not show that alteration granting him a usable power or qualifying as a Guide advancement. (Chapters 275 and 303–314)

Sword, shield, and defensive skills

Niel serves as a vanguard with a sword and a shield reinforced by enchanted steel. He uses an unnamed bodily glow while leaping from the tower and scrapes the shield against the wall to slow his descent. Against a cloud fairy, he coats the shield in shimmering ice and withstands repeated impacts that would threaten a less durable fighter. The scene also states the limit plainly: the Yellow creature is too fast for Niel to hit alone, so he can only hold it until Kai and Caeli create a coordinated opening. The text never names the movement or ice effects, identifies their grades, or supplies their mana costs, duration, or cooldowns. (Chapters 275–276)

Leadership, investigation, and cult-inflicted damage

Niel sets formations, warns companions not to separate, mediates disputes, questions families, and uses personal contacts to establish a line of outside accountability. These abilities make him an effective team organizer, but the source does not identify a Guide-granted leadership, navigation, or investigation skill; he can still take a wrong turn in Limgrell's dense fog and cannot detect or resist the cult's ambush. After a month of imprisonment, Mana Observer shows a murky tangle around his torso and the cult's carvings cover damaged channels and older scars. Potions briefly help him move, but he remains weak, bleeds through his bandages, and later passes out. The exact ritual, intended result, reversibility, and long-term prognosis are not established before his death. (Chapters 283–290 and 303–314)

Relationships

  • Keandra Tylenn: Niel is Keandra's friend and teammate, but the corpus does not establish that they knew each other for multiple years. He remains in Limgrell to help her search, she risks returning deeper into the cult base to rescue him, and he ultimately tackles Caeli to prevent her from killing Keandra. His last instruction is for Keandra to run. (Chapters 275–277, 303–304, and 314)
  • Kai Tylenn: Niel welcomes Kai into the tower group, protects him from a cloud fairy, and later confides his guilt over the Limgrell contract. Kai witnesses his abduction, spends the next month trying to find him, and fights through the cult's laboratory to release him from the altar. (Chapters 275–276, 290, and 303–307)
  • Mari: Mari is Niel's teammate and takes his disappearance hard. After his rescue, she immediately tends him, supports his weight through the tunnels, and helps carry him when he can no longer keep pace. (Chapters 275–277, 297–300, and 307–308)
  • Caeli: Niel believes Caeli is a teammate until the cult exposes her staged investigation. Although severely weakened, he tackles her when she tries to kill Keandra; he kills Caeli with a dagger and dies from her rapier wound. (Chapters 275–277, 304, and 313–314)
  • Valela Hightide: Valela helps Niel settle matters in Higharbor and sponsors him under her protection, prompting him to send her reports about the team's movements. After his death, she accepts responsibility for ensuring that his family will not have to worry about money. (Chapters 290, 300, and 317)

Items

  • Sword and reinforced shield: Niel carries a sword and a shield reinforced with enchanted steel as his normal adventuring equipment. He uses the shield to slow his fall from the tower and channels an ice layer over it when defending Kai. The source does not provide either item's name, grade, maker, or independent enchantment mechanics. (Chapters 275–276)
