James Bennett

James Bennett is Leonel Morales's childhood best friend, Royal Blue Academy tight end, and later one of the strongest individual combatants in Leonel's forces. His story turns on two betrayals committed under his father's influence and a long, imperfect return to the brothers he chose against. A prodigious Energy Shield user and self-made Spark, James eventually transforms defense into suppression, reflection, formation-breaking, and the protection of a family larger than the Bennett name.

Biography

The tight end who wants Leonel to lose

James grows up beside Leonel Morales, joining him at Royal Blue Junior Academy and becoming his closest friend and favorite receiver. He is a Five-Star tight end, physically gifted, socially uninhibited, and academically careless. Their partnership wins three national championships, but James enters the fourth title game carrying a request he will not explain. He deliberately drops pass after pass, including an apparent winning catch, because his father wants a favor from Conrad Siegfried's Governor Duke family. Leonel recognizes the sabotage, protects James from public blame, and still engineers a win after being hit with fractured ribs. (Chapters 2–4 and 2212)

Their locker-room argument establishes the fracture beneath the friendship. James knows Leonel has read him and asks why Leonel cannot lose once when football means so little to him. He resents Leonel's insistence that every task deserves respect and persistence, interpreting it as another way Leonel forces the world to end according to his own design. Yet James cannot explain his father's plan or admit that he has chosen family advantage over the team.
