Biography
Human, cat, mermaid, and plant
Kate accompanies the Caugust operation in the body of an orange cat, serving as a nervous guide and air-cannon operator while Saul enters the Inverted Tree. His unusual soul can migrate between hosts: after the Sky City crisis he occupies a mermaid body, and Saul later installs him in an experimental black branch made from Little Algae, Black Sea Tree, Inverted Tree, mermaid, and Floco-derived materials. Kate is only conditioning that shell for a future occupant rather than becoming its permanent identity, but the successful transfer leaves him alive and gives Saul evidence that the composite vessel can safely hold a soul. Appearance and personality
Kate is first recognizable as an orange cat with expressive whiskers and a tendency to panic under pressure. His later hosts include a mermaid and a rough black branch, but these bodies are temporary containers rather than changes to the identity of the sardonic former human inside them. Abilities
His soul adapts unusually well to radically different vessels, retaining awareness through animal, mermaid, and plant forms. As a cat he can scout tight spaces and operate prepared equipment; as branch-Kate he helps test soul-space compatibility. (Chapters 725–748, 789, and 839)
