Biography

Instructor, survivor, and ash remnant

Jonah met Saul as a sharp-tongued dark-element instructor whose brusque manner concealed professional seriousness. He traded in wraiths, recognized the dangerous pollution around Saul's eye, and urged that Saul be removed from Caugust. Much later, Saul found him mutilated inside ruined Bayton, apparently one of the academy massacre's survivors. The encounter proved illusory: Jonah was already dead, and the ash-person preserving his habits and memories crumbled when Saul touched him. (Chapters 465–498, 717–719)

Appearance and personality

Jonah initially has slanted eyes and a crooked mouth that reinforces his caustic expression. His final image is grievously damaged, missing an eye, fingers, and part of a limb, yet still trying to explain the catastrophe.

• Dark-element research, instruction, and handling of wraith specimens.
• Sufficient perception to recognize dangerous spiritual pollution in another wizard.

Relationships

• Saul: Jonah distrusts him at first but gives him a serious warning; Saul later uncovers the truth of Jonah's death.
• Beth: Jonah's preserved account associates her with the disaster that destroyed the academy community.
