Biography
Penny's abduction and the barbarian attack
Jayce presented himself as a coarse, untroubled former soldier, but his attachment to Penny governed his choices. After Captain Jeff took the blind girl to the wizard tower, Jayce confronted the soldiers, endured injury, and pressed Ada to retrieve her. He studied patrol movements and stayed beside Ada when barbarians attacked, refusing an easy retreat because abandoning Penny would repeat the loss of his own daughter. His last scene leaves him alive and committed to the rescue amid the town's collapse. (Chapters 96–109)
Appearance and personality
Jayce is a muscular, scarred man with tangled hair and beard. His leering humor and careless posture mask a protective, grief-driven temperament and the practical alertness of a veteran.
