The Rhine Lake bargain

Dodge had adapted to the Borderland while accumulating dangerous pollution, making Saul's offer of treatment and purchase of Rhine Lake materially attractive. He negotiated over the estate and its Veiled Crystal Essence, but secretly reported Penny and the Nightmare Butterfly to Dreammaker Clark through a dream bell. The betrayal brought no protection: Clark swallowed Dodge to inspect his memories directly, ending the cautious opportunist's attempt to profit from both sides. (Chapters 530–533)

Appearance and personality

Dodge is marked by the unhealthy effects of long-term Borderland pollution. He is guarded, transactional, and evasive, preferring concealed reporting to open confrontation.
