Biography

Research, betrayal, and atonement

Alfonso receives Saul in Evernight and conducts mermaid-bloodline research while supervising the captive emperor Alexandra. Behind that severe official role, he has spent years trying to free the atavistic mermaid Pearl from Tribunal exploitation. His secret pollution scheme escapes control, and Frim condemns him for endangering Nephret but permits a dignified death. Alfonso returns to the collapsing Red Sea defense, swallows mermaid royal blood, turns his body into bait for the Black Tide monsters, and self-destructs among them. The sacrifice saves much of the defense line but leaves no recoverable body or resurrection. (Chapters 811–823 and 838–869)

Appearance and personality

Alfonso is a stern man with inverted triangular eyes and a habit of speaking with disarming literalness. He records research in worn paper books and appears emotionally restrained, but his devotion to Pearl and friendship with Royer drive the choices that break his loyalty to Frim. Abilities

He specializes in dark magic, incomplete teleportation, bloodline fusion, and Black Tide biology. His final forbidden transformation changes flesh and blood into a powerful lure that draws polluted sea creatures away from the Red Sea Trees before exploding. (Chapters 811–814 and 868–869)

• Sander: Alfonso manages Sander as Evernight's royal bloodline vessel, valuing the political function over the emperor's freedom. (Chapters 811–813)
