Mowu

Mowu is a former black-armored rider chosen to accompany Ji Ning during his first journey through Swallow Mountain. He serves less as Ning's bodyguard than as an experienced guide, camp attendant, and representative of Ji clan authority.

Biography

Selection for Ji Ning's journey

When Ning prepares to leave home, Yuchi Snow limits his household entourage to two useful companions: Autumn Leaf, who knows his daily habits, and Mowu, whose years as a Ninefang Warrior and service under Ji Yichuan have given him practical experience in the wilderness. Ning accepts the arrangement, and Mowu departs with him and Autumn Leaf on black ferobeast mounts. (Chapters 24 and 27–28)

Mowu's limits determine how that service works. At Eastmount Marsh, Ning orders both attendants to wait with the mounts at the Metalstone Tribe because their strength is far below his and the water makes the ferobeasts useless. Mowu obeys, but after Ning fails to return for weeks he shares Autumn Leaf's vigil and recognizes the consequence imposed on retainers whose master dies. Ning's eventual return turns that anxious delay into the beginning of a longer circuit through the local tribes. (Chapters 29 and 34–36)

Escort and household duties

As Ning moves between vulnerable settlements, Mowu handles the tasks that do not require Ning's cultivation. He displays a Ji clan emblem to stop Braveshell's intimidation, gathers camp equipment, stands guard during private questioning, and keeps pace when Ning changes direction without explanation. When Autumn Leaf collapses after hearing of Spring Grass's death, he catches her before she falls. These actions show an experienced retainer preserving order around a young master whose attention is fixed on larger dangers. (Chapters 35 and 42–44)

Mowu also carries out coercive orders without confusing obedience with authority. He chains River He and suspends him from a tree after the man's abuse of local women is exposed. Mowu recommends removing River He's young son as a possible future threat, but Ning rejects the suggestion and decides the child should not inherit his father's punishment. Mowu then leaves Riverside City with the household rather than contesting that judgment. (Chapters 47–48)

At the Blacktooth Tribe, Ning signals Mowu to announce his identity to the approaching Firewing force. Mowu's invocation of the Ji name changes what appears to be a tribal battle into a demand that the opposing leaders recognize their regional overlord. Soon afterward, Ning sends Mowu, Autumn Leaf, and Bluestone toward Serpentwing Lake under the protection of one hundred black-armored guards. This is Mowu's last explicit role in the supplied corpus. Appearance and personality

Mowu is described as powerfully built. He is disciplined and reliably deferential to Ning, but he is not passive: he comforts Autumn Leaf, reads danger from local politics, and volunteers a harsh precaution when he believes a surviving enemy may threaten his master. His advice reflects the punitive customs of the Ji clan's world; Ning's refusal establishes that loyalty and moral judgment are not always the same thing. (Chapters 34, 35, and 48)

Abilities and cultivation

Ninefang Warrior training

Mowu formerly served as a Ninefang Warrior among the Ji clan's black-armored riders. The corpus does not identify a narrower cultivation stage or a named technique, so the title should be treated as evidence of professional martial training rather than a license to assign him supernatural arts. Ji clan authority

Mowu can act as the voice of Ning's household. A displayed Ji emblem is enough to make Braveshell retreat, and Mowu's announcement to the Firewing Tribe forces its leadership to recognize that an apparent local target is under Ji clan protection. This is delegated political authority rather than a combat technique: it works because nearby communities understand the Ji clan's power and Ning's status. (Chapters 35 and 65)
