Ji Yichuan

Ji Yichuan, the Raindrop Sword, is Ji Ning's father, first sword teacher, and model of strength disciplined by responsibility to family and clan.

Biography

Darknorth Seas and a damaged Immortal path

Yichuan leaves Swallow Mountain to adventure, reaches the Zifu Disciple level in the Darknorth Seas, and becomes known for exceptional swordplay. There he builds a family with Yuchi Snow and a life-and-death brotherhood with the Whitewater Hound. The return journey becomes a catastrophe: Snow is badly injured while pregnant, and Yichuan and his brother use forbidden arts to delay their enemies. Yichuan survives, but his Zifu Violet Palace becomes warped and atrophied, permanently stopping him at the mid-stage Zifu level and allowing him to draw only a thread of ki under normal conditions. That injury explains the tension in his later life. He has enough skill to dominate most of Swallow Mountain, but no ordinary path to further cultivation. Rather than let the loss consume him, he returns to the Ji clan, protects his recovering wife, and directs his ambition into raising their son. (Chapters 3–4 and 98)

Teaching and testing Ji Ning

Yichuan examines the newborn Ning without comforting exaggeration: despite treasures used to heal prenatal injuries, the child's body is ordinary. He begins with body control and basic movement, insisting that sword movements are born from the body and that a student must master strength and agility before learning technique. Only then does he teach the nine stances of the Raindrop Sword, demonstrating them repeatedly and leaving principles Ning later understands through life-and-death combat. (Chapters 3 and 10 and 54)

His sternness adapts to evidence. When ten-year-old Ning survives Serpentwing by reaching “one with the world” in footwork, Yichuan tests him with three sword-shadows and recognizes that the West Prefecture can no longer provide enough pressure. He permits adventuring only after Ning wins the Ceremony of the Golden Sword—not because he wants the prefecture title for his son, but because the public victory clears clan politics and proves readiness. Loss, clan war, and final sacrifice

Snow's old injuries worsen and eventually kill her. Yichuan continues long enough to see that Ning no longer requires his protection, then volunteers for the Ji clan's war against Snowdragon Mountain. He reveals that he had reserved one last use of his forbidden art for an emergency in which Ning shattered a jade sword and needed rescue. With Snow dead, Ning grown, and Yichuan's Immortal path already broken, he chooses to spend that final chance defending the clan rather than die quietly. (Chapters 81 and 98)

Within the Netherwyrm Heavenlock Formation, Yichuan fights beside Ji Ninefire and the clan's other Zifu Disciples. He uses the forbidden art to force a large volume of ki from his damaged Zifu, disrupting the enemy and buying time even though the technique will shatter the Violet Palace within an hour. The exertion leaves him weakened and coughing; the war is the last glory he deliberately chose, not an unexpected collapse. (Chapters 115 and 129–137)

Death, remembered lives, and restoration

Yichuan dies after the clan conflict, but his role in Ning's mind continues. During Ning's demonheart trial, an illusory father condemns him while loved ones repeatedly die. That figure is an attack built from Ning's guilt and attachment, not evidence that the real Yichuan held those views. Yichuan's soul reincarnates as Willowriver Chuan, creating a second mortal identity continuous at the soul level but initially without the first life's memories. (Chapters 137, 507, and 991)

Ning eventually pulls his parents from the River of Destiny and restores both sets of memories, reuniting Ji Yichuan and Yuchi Snow with their son. The restored Yichuan travels with Snow, Brightmoon, and Uncle White, complains good-naturedly about Ning's immensely long seclusions, and later joins the final celebration after Ning becomes Lord of the Chaosverse. His ending is therefore not merely resurrection for a scene, but a long family life that the sacrifices of his first life could not provide. (Chapters 991–1008, 1331–1332, 1384, and 1450)

Appearance and personality

Yichuan commonly wears white beast furs and carries himself with an icy, severe expression; even visible delight at Ning's achievements appears as only a rare softening of the face. He is practical, observant, and unwilling to flatter either his son or himself. Beneath that reserve, family devotion determines his greatest choices: he damages his cultivation saving Snow and unborn Ning, reserves his final forbidden technique for Ning's protection, and only spends it on the clan once convinced his son can stand alone. Restoration reveals a warmer, teasing patience that danger previously left little room to express. (Chapters 3, 24, 52, 86, 98, and 1384)

Abilities and cultivation

Raindrop Sword and Raindrop Sutra

Yichuan's title comes from mastery of the Raindrop Sword, a nine-stance system whose principles move between concentrated penetration and continuous defense. “Raindrop Pierces Rocks” focuses repeated force into a decisive point, while Rain Line, Thin Streams Flow Forever, and Watertight develop the same water principle into connected motion or protection. Yichuan teaches that the killing stance can be both strongest and weakest depending on comprehension; form alone is insufficient without understanding how the stances transform into one another. World-energy swordplay

Because his atrophied Zifu yields only a trace of ki, Yichuan cannot fight like an ordinary mid-stage Zifu Disciple or ride ranked treasures through sustained elemental output. He instead uses that thread of ki as a foundation and draws the power of the surrounding world into each sword-light. This makes his swordplay disproportionately dangerous relative to his damaged cultivation, but it does not restore his reserves or allow normal advancement. (Chapter 98)

Forbidden Zifu release

Yichuan can forcibly extract a final surge of ki from the warped Violet Palace. The technique temporarily returns the large energy output needed for a life-or-death battle, but the cost is explicit: within roughly an hour his Zifu will shatter and he will become a cripple. It is therefore a single-use sacrifice, first saved as an emergency means to rescue Ning and ultimately spent in the Ji clan's defense. (Chapters 98 and 129–137)

Teaching and combat assessment

His training method separates body control, fundamental movements, and named sword techniques. He can test progress with controlled sword-shadows, identify when Ning reaches unity with the world, and set challenges calibrated to force growth rather than obedience. This pedagogical ability has lasting mechanical consequences: Ning recalls Yichuan's demonstrations during mortal danger and uses them to deepen his own Raindrop Sword comprehension. Formation participation

During the Snowdragon Mountain war, Yichuan channels his skill through the Netherwyrm Heavenlock Formation alongside the Ji clan's other Zifu Disciples. The formation allows the clan to coordinate against stronger external enemies, but it does not erase each member's limits; Yichuan still has to invoke his ruinous forbidden art when the situation demands more energy than his damaged Zifu normally supplies. • Ji Ning: Yichuan is Ning's father, first sword teacher, and one of his deepest emotional anchors. He trains through demanding tests, reserves his final power to protect Ning, and later shares the family life Ning restores. (Chapters 3, 10, 24, 54, 98, and 991–1450)
• Yuchi Snow: Snow is his wife across two remembered lives. Yichuan's damaged Zifu originates in the battle to protect her and their unborn son, and restoration reunites them with both lives' memories. (Chapters 3–4, 54, 81, and 991)
• Whitewater Hound: Uncle White is Yichuan's sworn brother and companion from the Darknorth Seas. They use forbidden arts together during the family's disastrous return journey, and Uncle White later helps care for Ning and joins the restored family. (Chapters 54, 98, and 991–1008)
• Ji Ninefire: Yichuan serves the patriarch in the Ji clan's decisive defense and knowingly spends his remaining cultivation in the formation Ninefire directs. (Chapters 98 and 115–137)
