Ji Ninefire — Desolate Era

Ji Ninefire is the nearly four-hundred-year-old patriarch who guides the Ji clan through its conflict with Snowdragon Mountain. His greatest strengths are not raw cultivation but formation expertise, political judgment, and a willingness to place the clan's survival above either wealth or personal pride.

Biography

Patriarch of the Five Prefectures

Ninefire leads all five Ji clan prefectures from the City of Ten Thousand Swords. He is one of the clan's two publicly known Zifu Disciples and has spent centuries researching formations, medicine, and poison. His knowledge makes him the clan's best healer and battlefield planner, although the Ji clan's poor cultivation techniques prevent those centuries of effort from carrying him beyond the Zifu stage. He identifies Ji Ning early as the future pillar whose survival matters more than that of the current elders. (Chapters 68 and 84–91)

The elemental ore mine

When the clan finds an enormous deposit near its capital, Ninefire recognizes the danger behind the apparent fortune. Its value exceeds what a small local clan can defend, so he plans to transfer it to the Grand Xia Dynasty and accept a protected minority share. Snowdragon Mountain arrives first and demands not only the mine but the official writ for the City of Ten Thousand Swords—the legal foundation of the clan's homeland. Ninefire tries every concession that still leaves the lineage somewhere to live, including abandoning the mine and exchanging the writ for another territory. (Chapters 87–93)

Dong Ziqi refuses even that minimum. Ninefire then activates a bewildering formation he secretly prepared as soon as he understood the mine's scale. The earlier humility was genuine concern for the clan, not an absence of resistance. Once surrender means eventual extinction, he separates the five enemy Zifu Disciples, sends younger heirs away in several groups, and orders the remaining experts to kill the isolated invaders. Ning is given a Traceless Talisman and strict instructions to flee if the defense collapses. (Chapters 93–100)

Defense of Oxhorn Mountain

Ninefire forces the local Grand Xia garrison to report the mine publicly, then builds six delaying formations at Oxhorn Mountain to hold Snowdragon Mountain until an imperial envoy can arrive. Ning contributes the Netherwyrm Heavenlock Formation. Ninefire binds its dragon pearl, studies the unfamiliar structure, and becomes its central controller while four other Zifu Disciples anchor the dragon's component formations. Their shared energy, defensive distribution, attacking Netherwyrm, and bewildering fog let a handful of local cultivators resist a much larger force. (Chapters 107–124)

Nong Zidao eventually understands enough of the formation to strip away its fog, while Adept Xu Li seals the mountain against retreat. Believing the clan's defeat inevitable, Ninefire creates a sequence of sacrificial delaying attacks. He is prepared to send spirit-beasts, Ji Yichuan, Ah Xing, Granny Shadow, Truekeep, and finally himself to their deaths, but refuses to let Ning join them. He tells Ning that leaving alone requires more courage than dying with his family and that the clan will flourish as long as he survives. (Chapters 123–127)

Ning returns after a breakthrough and kills Adept Xu, saving the elders. Ninefire orders the surviving Snowdragon invaders executed, then prepares evacuation until Northmont Baiwei arrives for the Marquisate of Stillwater. He signs a legal transfer of the mine, securing protection and an honest share for the clan. Even then, he tries to surrender part of that share to Baiwei as a political safeguard, but Baiwei's friendship with Ning makes the gift unnecessary. (Chapters 134–137)

Final years

Before Ning departs, Ninefire accepts the Nine Scrolls on Formations, the Thunderflame Sword Addendum, and the Rainwater Sutra for the clan repository. He recognizes the last as a future clan-protecting inheritance. Ninefire later lives long enough to learn that Ning won the Conclave of Immortal Destiny. He dies when his natural lifespan ends, proud that the endangered local lineage produced one of Grand Xia's greatest figures. (Chapters 138 and 394)

Appearance and personality

Ninefire is an elderly gray-robed man shaped by almost four centuries of responsibility. Outsiders call him crafty, and the description is fair: he hides prepared formations, controls what allies know so their reactions remain convincing, and understands when a valuable concession can buy security. His craft serves a consistent purpose. He accepts humiliation while it may preserve the clan, fights only when surrender would erase its future, and becomes frantic whenever Ning risks the life on which that future depends. Abilities and cultivation

Formation expertise

Ninefire has studied formations for centuries. Before Oxhorn Mountain he prepares six independent defensive and bewildering arrays designed to consume an enemy expert's time rather than win through raw power. He understands how concealment, layered resistance, elemental flows, and ambushes interact, and can guide allies through his fog while separating enemies from one another. His formations are strong for a local Zifu Disciple, but a specialist such as Nong Zidao can eventually analyze and dismantle their critical nodes. (Chapters 93–108 and 123–127)

Netherwyrm Heavenlock Formation

The Netherwyrm Heavenlock Formation consists of a central dragon pearl and four component disks representing the head, body, claw, and tail. Ninefire controls the pearl while four Zifu Disciples anchor the secondary formations. It pools their elemental energy, spreads incoming damage across the group after weakening it, creates an attacking Netherwyrm, and fills the battlefield with disorienting nether fog. Ninefire can open safe corridors for allies and redirect the constructed dragon against distant attacks. Its power depends on all five controllers and prepared placement; it is not a portable personal spell. (Chapters 107–127)

Poison sword and Thunderflame Pearls

Ninefire uses six Thunderflame Pearls to trigger the opening ambush against Dong Ziqi's group. In combat he controls a mottled five-colored flying sword described as a poison sword, reflecting his research into toxins. These weapons help kill peer Zifu Disciples inside favorable formations but do not erase the large gap between Ninefire and elite Zifu combatants or Wanxiang Adepts. (Chapters 93–96 and 135)

Medicine and poison

His studies make him the Ji clan's leading medical practitioner and a recognized poison user. The corpus establishes broad expertise rather than a catalogue of named prescriptions or poison effects, so his demonstrated formation command remains the clearest measure of his technical ability. (Chapters 68 and 94–96)

Relationships

Ji Ning: Ninefire identifies Ning as the clan's future, protects his cultivation during the siege, and repeatedly tries to force him away from suicidal battles. Ning's return ultimately saves the clan. (Chapters 90–138)
Granny Shadow: Shadow is Ninefire's younger sister, fellow Zifu elder, and one of the principal controllers in his clan-defense formations. (Chapters 84–135)
Ji Yichuan: Ninefire trusts Yichuan as a principal defender and is prepared to sacrifice him only when every other path appears closed. (Chapters 88–138)
