Adept Vastriver
Adept Vastriver is one of the Black-White College's elite Wanxiang disciples, a reincarnated Immortal whose experience makes him a cautious adviser as well as a capable companion during the Witchriver Immortal Estate expedition.
Biography
A reincarnated senior disciple
When Ning first meets Vastriver, the gray-robed cultivator is already recognized as one of the college's three reincarnated Immortals at the Wanxiang level. Vastriver has trained for a long time, mastered a complete Dao Path, and awakened fragments of his former-life memories. He nevertheless refuses to treat reincarnation as a uniform advantage. In discussing Yu Wei, he explains that reincarnated Immortals return with very different past accomplishments and that her simultaneous command of ice and fire reflects an unusually strong former foundation. Vastriver stays at Serpentwing Lake to exchange insights and spar with Ning, Yu Wei, and Mu Northson before the Conclave. He also explains why the Conclave matters beyond a tournament prize: the gathering draws the attention of powers above ordinary Celestial Immortals and has historically become the place where outstanding young cultivators are selected as disciples. His combination of remembered experience, frequent adventuring, and willingness to discuss the Dao makes him an informed senior peer rather than merely another member of Ning's entourage. The Witchriver expedition
Vastriver recognizes Youngflame Nong as one of the Youngflame clan's most important heirs and joins the party invited to help him bind the Witchriver Immortal Estate. He shares the group's enthusiasm when the estate appears to contain Immortal-ranked treasures, but his conduct becomes increasingly protective as the danger rises. He joins Yu Wei and Ninelotus in a five-elements formation against the estate's illusions and warns Mu Northson when the expedition's enemies press their attack. (Chapters 254–255, 263, and 273–275)
The true crisis comes when Nong blames Ning for the expedition's losses. Vastriver tries to de-escalate the dispute, proposing compensation and a binding oath rather than bloodshed. When Nong orders Xiangliu Fang to kill Ning anyway, Vastriver angrily rejects the command and attempts to interfere despite knowing that the ancient Fiendgod can suppress him. After Nong and Fang die, Vastriver does not abandon Ning out of fear; he urges Ning to focus on surviving and overturning the Youngflame clan's advantage. He leaves only when Ning insists that the others escape, then returns to the Black-White College with Yu Wei and Northson to report what happened. (Chapters 276–279 and 283)
Watching the Conclave
At the Conclave of Immortal Destiny, Vastriver follows the progress of Ning, Yu Wei, and the other college disciples from the spectators' area. He understands how many formidable participants are reincarnated Immortals and worries that Ning's killing of Youngflame Nong will bring disaster before Ning has the strength to answer it. Ning's victory changes that calculation: Vastriver celebrates the championship and personally congratulates the junior disciple whose rise has exceeded even his experienced expectations. Appearance and personality
Vastriver is introduced as a gray-robed man with deep eyes and an extraordinary aura. He enjoys adventure and reacts eagerly to the possibility of Immortal treasures, yet greed does not overrule his judgment. His first instinct in a political crisis is to negotiate, and when that fails he risks Youngflame retaliation by siding with Ning. He is observant without being condescending, candid about the uneven gifts of reincarnated Immortals, and generous in celebrating the success of younger disciples. Abilities and cultivation
Reincarnated-Immortal foundation
Vastriver has awakened portions of his former memories and already mastered a complete Dao Path while still at the Wanxiang level. Those memories give him a mature understanding of cultivation and the wider immortal world, but the narrative explicitly distinguishes remembered attainment from present-day power. (Chapters 250–251)
Elite Wanxiang combat
He belongs to the college's highest tier of Wanxiang disciples and can productively spar and discuss the Dao with Ning and Yu Wei. Against Xiangliu Fang, however, he is decisively suppressed, establishing the limit between his peer-level strength and an ancient Fiendgod's power. (Chapters 252 and 277)
Five-elements coordination
In the Witchriver estate he combines with Yu Wei, Ninelotus, and their companions in a five-elements formation. The formation allows the group to pool complementary energies and resist threats that would be much more dangerous if each cultivator fought alone. (Chapter 273)
Experience and threat assessment
Vastriver repeatedly identifies political and tactical danger early: he recognizes Nong's rank, understands the estate's formations, and seeks an oath-backed settlement before a clan vendetta becomes unavoidable. This is demonstrated judgment rather than a separately named divine ability. (Chapters 254, 273, and 276)
Relationships
- Ji Ning: Vastriver spars with Ning, accompanies him into Witchriver, opposes Nong's execution order, and later celebrates Ning's Conclave victory. (Chapters 252, 255–279, and 349–355)
