Xiphos

Xiphos Valtron is an Enkindling Sage of the Empyrean Chalice who recognizes Zac's Imperial Faith and ultimately passes his order's flame to him.

Biography

Role in the wider conflict

Xiphos first approaches Zac out of curiosity about the extraordinary merit and familiar sacred flame surrounding him, deliberately setting aside official rank to question him as another protector of the Faith. When the failing dream later reveals the empire's true fate, Xiphos refuses to pursue an impossible personal rescue. He instead forces Zac to decide whether the title of Holy Son carries responsibility, then accepts Zac's commitment and burns away his own essence to heal and temper him, open the sealed path, and empower the means of closing the dimensional breach. His death completes the Enkindling Sage's mission by transferring both power and obligation to a living successor. (Chapters 1330 and 1404–1407)

Appearance and personality

Xiphos appears as a young man despite his senior status, accompanied by a guardian and carrying the authority of a rank comparable to a Grand Deacon. He can be warm, curious, and almost childlike when hearing Zac's story, but his devotion is uncompromising: after learning the truth, he calmly measures individual survival against the fate of countless citizens and chooses sacrifice. Abilities and cultivation

Xiphos is a late-stage Hegemon whose Empyrean flame can isolate conversations, nourish allies, oppose hostile divinity, and consume spiritual remnants. In his final impartment, the flame heals Zac, incinerates embedded spikes, tempers body and soul, aligns him more closely with the Four Laws, and offers limited protection against heavenly ire. The effect is powerful but not unlimited: Xiphos says its mitigation will diminish as Zac advances, and producing the blessing consumes Xiphos completely. (Chapters 1330 and 1404–1405)

Items

Xiphos carries a token identifying his station and commands a manifestation of the Empyrean Chalice. The chalice's accumulated flame is expended during his final stand; it functions as an emblem and vessel of the order rather than ordinary personal equipment. (Chapters 1330 and 1404)

Relationships

• Zac Atwood: Xiphos recognizes Zac as the Empyrean Chalice's chosen Holy Son, tests whether he will accept that inheritance, and gives his life to make Zac capable of carrying it forward. (Chapters 1330 and 1404–1407)
